Default Roller cam/ or flat tappet?

I have read alot of threads on here about roller and flat tappet cams/ i have never had a motor with a roller cam, untill i bought my 2004 silverado, and i bought it used about 3 years ago, it was my first vehicle to have power steering and a.c., just stating that so you guys know how far behind i am, anyways im building a 2- bolt main 454 that is 30 over with stock unported 049 heads. The boat is a 18ft aquacraft shark with 12 deg casale the gears are i believe 18's, the boat will be used just for ski and pulling tubes for right now, (untill the wife makes more money hehehe) and it will only be used about 1 or 2 times a year, maybe three if were lucky. The question is, for this application is it worth dropping the money for a roller cam? I want a cam that i will get long term use out of, and not have to be adjusting valves and so forth.. So im between getting a mild hyd. Roller or a flat tappet cam and i have never built a motor with a roller, but i was going to get a retro fit kit that came with everything, just not sure which kit, and i do know that i should talk to cstraub about the morels, so im looking for a cam that will last a long time with no adjusting of valves and so forth, im not racing, just want a dependable cam , i was thinking if i went with a roller and i set everything up right it should last a long time, i hear of horror stories with flat tappet cams now, and thats all i have ever used so roller is new to me, sorry for the long post just wanted opinions or advise thanks..

You answered your own question. Yes go hydraulic roller, they will live a long time. And yes talk with Chris Straub, he will set you straight on the complete package.

I have a new comp cams hydraulic flat tappet with no issues. Proper break in and it's perfect. Cheap and pretty decent power.

If you are not wanting a lot of power and will not be turning high rpm just use a flat tappet cam. We made a lot of power long before they came out and some still do. You will save a lot of bucks. Just use a good cam and lifters and always use the right oil. The $500 you save could go elsewhere.

I would go hydraulic roller, and you don't have to worry about it. If the cam goes flat it's tear down, clean out, and start over with more down time. is flat tappet worth it? Not to me.

With stock 049's and a 2 bolt WHY waste the money on a roller? A properly set up Flat tappet is very low maintance and will last a long time. Find a "Boutique" Cam Co.......They do them right!

LOL...sounds like you're already a few ahead of everyone else.
What's retarded is acting like you know something that you don't and giving poor advice with no facts.

    Your world? LOL...
In what "world" is a flat tapapet better than a roller? I guess maybe you better start making the rounds to all the OEM's and setting them straight.
I think we know who's full of shit here. Have another drink.

"Your world" thinks you're an ass...but that's another subject.
Like I said...you need to go back and tell all those OEM engineers how much smarter you are than they are.
Let us know how that works out for ya.

Not to get into your match with PS/B1 but with what he wants to do a flat tappet will work fine and last a long time. True. Not as much performance but he don't need it. Now. On with the show.
