Pure junk. I think Barkley summed them up best.

I think the Nascar is correct, but it was earlier years such as late 60's or early 70's and out of production since the mid 70's. Short lived carburetor and specific parts are hard to find as well as the performance was not that good in comparison with other Holley models. Cool conversation pieces. The last one I had come through the shop was in the early 1980's.

Someone must have promoted them for a 340. Almost seems like Edelbrock did some kind of a test with them around 1971. I might have that old catalog/info somewhere. My uncle purchased the first Duster 340 in Texas and he was interested in the 3 barrel shortly after that too.

I doubt it was intended for Nascar. When Nascar first handed down the single 4 bbl rule, it only pertained to Hemis. Maybe the 3 bbl was intended for them. That is quite possible. But non hemis could run 2X4s, including the Tunnel Port Ford 427. They didn't need no stink'n 3 bbl
When Ford introduced the Boss in 1969, they also contracted Holley to build the dominator for it, which Ford had the exclusive of for one year. That killed the 3 bbl DEAD!
I guess its possible that Dodge Hemis ran them in Nascar. Everything else ran 2X4 until the hemi was banned as were multi carbs.

They were the most popular at the drags on both BBC and SBC. They FALSELY believed it was resposable for an pretty significant gain in RPM. Turned out that the notch in the manifold divider was what was really responsable for the gain and the notch or the removale of the divider became a super popular mode. Even the 4 bbl ZL1 and L88 chevy came from the factory with a notch in the divider, long after the 3 bbl was dead and the manifold didn't need a notch.'

The 3 bbl suffered the shortest life of any performance carb, specially a Holley. released in 68, and the Dominator was public in 70. Holley doesn't even mention they made them, and there are no parts available for them. You can rebuild one using existing gaskets and stuff with small mods like cutting the base gasket. The biggie is the secondary diaphram. Its HUGE! Its also no available. But the diaphram for the outer 2bbl carbs for the 6pak MoPars from Holley have diaphrams and they can be made to work on the 3bbl with very little work.

Didnt the original Race Hemi have 1 4bbl and the Street version come with 2 4bbls?
Was the Race Hemi for Nascar or Drags?

I ran a 950 3bbl on a 427 FE Ford in my Hondo....One of the best carbs I ever ran. Idled like a 1850 on a stocker with no loading up, fouling plugs etc. Pulled like a Baldwin Locomotive to about 7100 with nary a stumble, flatspot, surge, burble, fart or grunt....Send me all ya got if yer gonna junk 'em.

The nascar Hemi had 2X4 until Nascar made the single 4 bbl rule. The SOHC 427 Ford was originally built as a 2X4 Nascar engine but was banned before it made a single lap.
As a concession to the non hemi cars, they made the hemis run single 4bbls and the wedgers ran dual. This was a relatively short lived rule. Ford came out with the Boss with a Dominator, then Nascar ruled out both the Hemi and the Boss.

I guess it was better than running a Q jet. Specially on a Ford.
