    Don't know if I'm posing in the correct section but I have a olds 455 in a jet boat the valve covers fill with oil I believe it has a high volume oil pump any suggestions would be appreciated again I'm new to this forum I pulled the motor check the bearings they look good is a stock motor aside from the pistons an intake and headers I have read hose about enlarging the drain backs in adding restrictors the motor is in the boat I don't really wanna pull it again but I will if necessary just looking for advice on what I should do if I pull it again

    Search mondello there are plenty of ideas from adding drain backs to the heads to oil restrictors in the mains
    It may be OLD ,it may be Slow ... but at least it's MOBILE !!!

    put pipe cleaners inside the pushrods that slows the flow down that is what they did in the old days i did it to a olds that i had in a jet worked fine or go to mondelo they have pushrods for $220

    There are tons of things you can do. I put a catch can on the outlet of the breather tubes, it collected an amazingly small amount of oil for how much seemed to come out of the breathers before I did it, but it kept the boat cleaner.

    I polished the inside (oil area) of the heads and drilled the returns out quite a bit. You can hit the bolt hole if you aren't careful, but as it turns out, the head bolt is blind anyway and it doesn't leak.

    I polished the inside of the lifter valley, cleaned up the holes in the bottom of it, and drilled the front bulkhead for oil return.

    Take out your HV pump and put in a lower volume pump. All that extra oil just ends up in the top end, not on the mains like you'd think. Get the restrictors from Mondello and limit the upper end oiling even more.

    I put close to 80 hrs on a 455 in my hydro before i swapped in a chev.with no oil system mods other than a 10 qt pan with 8qts, a high volume pump necessary to maintain oil pressure with more bearing clearances and the drain backs reworked.I ran the motor plenty hard and never hurt it. Something i think is plenty important...i never spun it hard until the oil was hot.

    I have a metal valve cover i drilled for a 3/4" hose barb as close to the gasket as i could. Ran a clear plastic hose into the oil pan drain fitting. The only time the hose had oil in it was if the valve cover was on the outside of a turn.

    Without pulling the heads the pipe cleaner option is good, i guess you have run the motor and haven't hurt it yet, you must be doing something right. The only real issue with oil under the covers is if the pan runs low, i had to run 8 qts in mine because of the angle the engine was had the crank swinging through the oil in the pan.

    Just remember, olds is not a high performance motor and will never be one. I never spun mine faster than 5100 and then it was only for very short periods of time. It was plenty happy @ 4-4200 for as long as i wanted.

    Most people don't have much good to say about a 455....I like mine, ran it with a t/r and 660's and from barely on plane to about 50 mph it's at least as fast as the 427..same carbs/gears/prop.

    Search for an artical called "the practical olds" follow it to a t and you should be good im going through mine now and am gonna do the pipe cleaner trick my engine builder told me that and i thought he was crasy and well i guess the joke is on me lol no i already have main restrictors and have alum heads and have worked the valley and everything that has been said to need to be done so should i still do the pipe cleaner deal?

    Never even knew about that artical i will check it out always up for more knowlage no one on this site will ever seem to be helpfull with an olds cause they "WILL blow up if you EVER once turn one 5,001 rpm 1 time its blown up!" If you dont believe me just ask everyone on this sight will tell you im about done with this site im gonna go back to txhotboats

    Thanks for all the info I will try the pipe cleaner trick first if that doesn't work it sounds like restricted push rods are the way to go a catch can doesn't sound like a bad idea either right now i have a piece of hose going from the farthest breather to the oil fill tube but i havent had it in the water like this
