    Default Engine build question

Looking into another build, I aquired some 049 cast heads and just wondered what size a dome piston would fit. I'd like to see somewhere into the 11.5:1 range. I've seen pistons up to -48 cc, seems like a really large dome and I think something like that would put CR upwards of 12:1. Anybody running large domes with cast heads? Just starting to piece this thing together. Any advice is welcome. As far as the rest of the motor. I was thinking a 468 range. Don't know if I can quite afford to go with a stroker.

If I recall correctl, the original LS 7 BBC was supposed to be 12:1. They were probably closer to 11.5.
The LS 7 came with aluminum heads, but the chamber was essentially the same as your heads. ( open chamber)

Unfortunately I don't know what the CC was on those domes.

Ls-7s had 990 square ports. As cast 119cc chambers. 049s also have a 119cc chamber. Piston catalogue will give C.r. for different size chambers. I have run as high as 13-1 with cast heads with no problem. I have a set of ls-7 pistons, rings, and pins im a box. Never been run. Also have a virgin 4 bolt block to put them in. I will look tomorrow and see what the ls-7 C.R. was.

Be careful on large domes in 049 heads... the rectangle open chambers and large oval open chambers are slightly different in shape... especially in the spark plug area.

OK, fast lake boat... so you understand race gas/ av gas will be required, correct?
If that is ok, why limit it ot 11.5. If that is not ok, 11.5 WILL be an issue.

Wags, thanks for that. I should have mentioned I will be using av gas. A buddy and I will split a 55 gal drum for a weekend. My biggest concern is piston contact using a large dome. What's gonna be my best option? I'd hate to order pistons only to find out they won't work. The only reason for oval heads is my tunnel is oval.
