I am looking to buy a flattie. It has a chev 427 250 blower I dont know what else is in it. motor needs a new flywheel. What should I need to concern myself with? seller doesn't have the money to do a flywheel. should I buy or not????

If it was an aluminum flywheel most likely it flung the ring gear off. We broke 2 in gramps cracker and 1 in high maintenence. We replaced both flywheels with the 1 piece billet Miezere flywheel.

Let me see if I have this correct. You want an opinion if you should by this thing or not based on the flywheel being in pieces, without knowing the make, years, and general condition of the boat itself. OR THE PRICE!!!!!!

Based on the info given, I wouldn't give it 2 thoughts if it was listed on Ebay or Craiglist.

How much damage was done to the boat when the ring gear came off? When I bought my B boat there was evidence of a past episode of exploding ring gear. If it came apart while the engine was running there should be other damage somewhere and even if it was contained in a bell housing, there would be evidence of it.

Otherwise I would view it as an excuse to not let you hear the engine run and suspect it is a pile and not worth a cent. But, that is just my opinion.

Good thought but my first question would be why it blew up a flywheel. then I would spin the engine over by hand to feel for any nasties with and without the plugs in! The best question is always "why" before you buy!

Real question is, did it blow up a flywheel, or a cheap stock flexplate, or even a cheap stock iron flywheel?

With the lack of pertinent information the answer you are seeking will only be found in a crystal ball IMHO

If this is the boat, judging from the last post it looks like you bought it ..... hope it turns out well for ya

You forgot one. Maybe some one machined the flywheel so the ring would slip on easier
Need help finding this 1973 Sanger 18'6" bubble deck mahogany bottom and stringers I was living in Pomona when I sold her in 1979. Just wonder if she still exists

Update Found my old Sanger 12/7/14 in Reno.

Ditto..... Unless it's REALLY cheap run away..... By cheap I mean as though it doesn't have an engine because chances are it has more problems than just a flywheel.... OR, go to the expense and labor to put a flywheel on it and see if it runs.... OR, at least offer to do that and see what he says, what other excuse he comes up with not to run the motor??
