My new project is on the move and looking at motor options. I have a 460 bbf i can use already in a boat i have but not sure if i should use that and build it up later or buy a motor a guy i know has. Im not very hip on motor internals and stuff but he told me its freshly built and the text he sent me was this: 4 bolt main 454, with 396 heads, flat top pistons, forged crankand rods 7/16, its punched 40 over, heads shaved, ported and polished,, 550 solid lift cam fluid dampner , all roller rocker, edelbrok intake mallory distributer i beleive its all arp, does this sound like a good motor, i beleive i would need a bigger pan and new head gaskets since i beleive it was for a truck , but please let me know your thoughts , im starting a full blown project and tryin to soak up all the knowledge i can on all te forums i found but i think this site has some smart fellas and way more traffic. thanks in advance
I need help for sure, lol. just waiting for some motor guys to give me their opinion.
The first thing I would do is have him pull a cylinder head. Paint and pretty stuff can sell a junk engine real qwik to the unknowing! No offense inferred But if you can, take a person with more engine savy to have a peek! Those look to be 290 heads and there is no way they will flow to 9K. Be carefull and good luck.
Wow you can tell a head by pic, Im way behind on all this i need less forum time more wrench time, lol. The guy is a good friend of a friend, pretty knowledgeable for around here i guess, im starting to think just pullin my wreidt apart and using everything in it to build this boat then selling the old hull and trailer to get it out of the way, its a 460, ive always been a chevy guy but hell looks like all i know is brands and what im used too. By no means will this boat be a river racer , maybe its just a better starting point to go basic then step up instead of tryin to milk the hog.
The first alert is the .040 over. There are no REAL performance pistons at that size for a BBC. The only forged piston I know of is Icons, and they are a good BUDGET piston, but by no means a 9000 rpm piston. My money says they are cast pistons, and hypereutectic at best.
Like Ol Guy posted, the heads cannot support a 396 to 9000 RPM, let alone a 462. The rockers are cast Crane roller rockers and not up to the spring pressures of a roller cam, or the claimed RPM. The stock rods, even the 7/16 bolt, even with ARPs best bolt, are good much past 7000, and then for only short bursts like drag racing. FOR AWHILE!!!
There is NOTHING in that assembly I would trust for any period of time past 6000.
I bet the heads are stock 2.06 intake and stock exhaust size as well.
If he LIES about one thing, the WHOLE THING could be a lie except for what you can see. Which is NOTHING!
I appreciate all that gn7 , I think im going to stick with my original plan and disect my other boat to make my new one work il run the (460) motor til it wont run no more then switch power plants. I think its the safest bet for me with such a lack of knowlege with motors at this point in time il just keep following posts and learn as much as i can til i can make a smart engine purchase, thank you again! All of you!
