Default Through Transom exhaust routing questions.

Given the fact that I'm posting in the all-mighty Dyno section, I have my flame suit on and sealed.

Here is the situation: 21' Eliminator Daytona Jet. 502" Obnoxious Racing engine. 8-71.. yadda yadda. Through transom headers with the tips in the CENTER of the transom rather than spaced from side to side.

My question is, how would you experts go about routing the "tailpipe" from the header collector to the tips. This has posed a bit of a challenge. The tail pipe needs to make two very tight 90* bends. One 90* directly out of the collector (towards the center of the boat) and one 90* (directly towards the transom/tips).

    The options in my head:

    1. find the tightest radius pre-bend 4" 90s and hope that they are tight enough to make the turns needed in the space provided.
    2. Silicone 90* couplers with a piece of straight pipe to make up the space between bends
    3. The sharpest/tightest option of taking a 4 inch pipe, cutting it at a 45* angle, putting the two piece together to make a direct 90* and weld them together. (obviously the worst "flowing" of the options)

Is it going to cost any noticeable power if we were to go with the direct 90* from the two 45*s welded together? This is by no means an all out race boat, more of a hot rod family cruiser, but don't want to give up free horsepower.

Here is a photo that better shows the distance that the tailpipe will have to go "in" towards the center of the boat to reach the tips from the headers.

Custom headers... How much room do you have from the end of the collector to the tips?

Well, you have to have some flex connection between the engine and the transome at some point, so you might as well do that where it makes this the easiest. You can't create as much power loss in the 4" as you can in the first 2" of pipe off the heads, even if you cut the 4" on a mitre and welded them the power loss would be less than a bad turn out of the head.

Here is a site that has the best selection of 4" stainless 90* I know of. Top Quality stuff. Use the 304.

    Bestweld - Pipe Fittings Tangent&shape=Elbow&spec=Short Radius 90°&alloy=304L Stainless Steel&sch=10

go to products, then long tnagent, and select the fittings you want.

btw, NICE BOAT!!!!! but why does it have a irrigation pump hanging on the transome??

    Thanks guys!

Bob, thank you for the link. I'll take a look. As for the ditch pump hanging off that back... If it had a prop coming out of a vdrive, it would likely be in the form of a GN cruiser, and lord know you wouldn't want some youngster coming to Burley and putting the 7 boat a lap down and besides, who would be there to take photo sequences of the body snatcher getting beat to the turn pin!

    Thanks again!

    that thing is nice Ian.

don't get all hung up on how you get the exhaust out from point you are. Water entry point into the exhaust stream and the BLING are almost as important at this point in the system. On your worse case I doubt you could create the restriction of the best mufflers.

Yeah, where would the GNs be without jets to take pictures and tow us back in when we break,

That is the exact statement I wanted to hear when writing this thread. Thanks for the reassurance my friend. I highly doubted the engine would care too much about how the exhaust exits once it reaches the collector. I'll just work on getting the two mated up somehow in a clean a simple way.

    Thanks again Bob.

Make sure you unbolt that trailer queen of yours from the trailer next time you back it into the water.

Bob, I apologize for this degenerates lack of manners. As hard I've tried he still takes after his mother and the total disregard for showing some respect.

    Thanks for the advice....

I have learned to deal with him. I have heard his best genes are in the closet, and they have holes in them

Any chance you can use 2 45's instead of 90's?
