Anyone have experience using the Hunt Mag converter that lets you run an Autometer tach? I wired it exactly like Hunt mags said and no workie. I by-passed the converter and wired the mag to a toggle switch like I used to run 200 years ago and varooom .... motor fires.

What am I doing wrong or is the converter just a $75 waste of time?

Not familiar with Hunts converter, but if its like Autometer's converter, its not hard to mis wire it.

Did your instructions look like this?

https://www.huntmagnetos.com/auto_meter_tach_converter.html
That's exactly what Hunt Mags sold me, I wired it like the instructions .... Red to switched hot, Black to battery neg, Violet to (green) tach trigger, Brown/Orange to one terminal of the toggle switch and continuing to the mag, Brown/Black to the other terminal of the toggle switch.

Here's where it's confusing, to me it looks like the Brown/Black might/should continue to the terminal on the coil and the Brown/Orange should terminate at the toggle switch??? Anyway, Hunt mags told me to wire it like I did .... Brown/Orange to toggle switch then to the mag ..... that didn't work.

Did I mention my curiosity is growing .... I'm starting to wonder what a converter looks like as a 12 pound sledge hammer smashes it onto the concrete shop floor :))THumbsUp

I finally got mine wired exactly like it says (with help from someone way smarter than me)

Red-switched pos
Black-battery neg
Brown/Orange-to toggle switch then to mag
Brown/Black-to other side of toggle switch then grounded to block
Violet-Green Tach trigger

But it wants to start with toggle switch in either position

Got pissed and removed the converter from the system and wired mag only ...... motor tries to start no matter which position toggle is in ..... on my way to get a new toggle switch :duh:

Found the problem, grounded to a better location and it works with just the mag. Next I will re wire the converter and see what happens.

Flat Screwd .... I didn't use the brown/yellow either, that's for the external coil mag according to the destructions lol

Mag Tach...

David, look around for the "right" tach for a mag... I traded Art Anderson a new Autometer ignition type tach for a used Mag type to be used in the PS11 boat... Worked great, I still "own" the tach, but no, it's not for sale. With all the really smart people removing Mags and installing the high tech MSD stuff, there should be a few Autometer "MAG" types out there for sale or trade... Throw out some WTB threads on a few performance sites, you never know what you might find...
