Cool gta lil scare today while tuning

Me n uncle went out after work to tune our deals to run alil cleaner.last time out my turbo 5.3 was alil fat on secondaries and high boost so i wanted to clean it up, jetted down couple sizes made a nice hard pass watchn afr. and i had taking away alil too much and was seeing 11.7-11.8 at 19lbs so i turn on my 3rd water meth nozzle to fatten it up alil.line up for pass ,hit it hard n sure nuff afr is where i want it but at the end of pass while still in alot of boost i hear n feel a cylinder go down, let out as fast as safely possible and it goes to missing. thot oh shit done took a ringland off a piston, i go out n start unplugging coils till i found the miss at #2. Hobbled it back to the ramp with a sad face long drive back from the lake even tho its only 8miles.back boat into my shop and start pullin even bank plugs prepared for the worse.dont see shit wrong ,bank still has 150psi on each so i pick up 1 plug at a time and check em with my lil magnifier flashlite and nada till i get to #2. See a crack in porcelin , turn the plug so its pointed down and hear a clink, damn porcelin cracked and slid down closing the gap lol went from a shit afternoon to a good day.guessn the added water meth either hit the plug unatomized n cracked the insulator nuff to let it slide down. jus knew id proved the ls naysayers right lol scared me thinkn i was gna be changing a piston in.mine this wknd but got lucky.

so i gta back the watermeth down i think if its hitn a hot plug that way.any other causes for a insulator to slide down like that i dont know of? Im thinkn bad plug since they look awesome otherwise.champion stock 5.3 plugs for truck engines.heat range is lookn perfect on em.no chance of ever seeing a fuel ring, the watermeth steam cleans that away.champion plug jus shit? always run delco ngk or champion and have never had issue till tday.

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

detonation, better the plug than a piston

Cldve been.none of the plugs show sign and i can bump up the piston in see alot of them and theyre rich lookn not clean.im leaning towards the watermeth may have puddled and maybe hit that plug or just was a badplug.nothing wrong with inulsator other than it cracked and slid down.never herd of detonation doin that but hell anything is possible.afr was 11.2-11.3 when it happened and i was runin almost double the watermeth i normally do by turning on the preturb injection..
was glad it wasnt a piston no doubt but i gave the rings plenty of gap to keep em from butting..#7 ive been told is aleays leanest on these engines and that hole n plug look great.like i said pistons look rich plugs clean.im putting the jet back to the secondaries and leaving preturb injection off.ran perfect alil fat so gna call that tuneup good and leave it be.

Could have something to do with almost 20psi and pump gas being in the equasion . Maybe take a tiny bit of timing out of that hole.

    How's bill's doin?

Nah its ran great up till i tried saving fuel.im putn back the jets it liked and jus leave it alil on the fat side.i made a pretty big jet jump on secondaries and its was a mistake the motor didnt like.ive seen a insulator do the slide on a cobalt 2.2 engine so im alil conflicted on the cause today.the crack and sliding down is what has me perplexed.the cobalt's plug was clearly a defective plug as the whole insulator came loose and slid down.this plug cracked jagged and it jus looks odd.ill try n get a good cell pic n text ya n sec.

Starting to wonder if i may have cracked the insulator when i was closing the gaps on the plugs when i got em.stock truck gap is bout 65 and i closed em to 35. So it was a bit to get em down that lil.

anybody ran into this due to detonation? Lookn around the net im not finding any instances or examples of detonation making a crack in the insulator. of course plenty of speckled insulator stories lol

Yeah not uncommon at all when it detonates. I have seen it blow the entire ceramic out of the plug, nothing but the hex in the head on twin turbo 23 ft cruiser v drive. Seems to be more common on turbo deals than roots. May have something to do with elvated temps due to short overlap periods and the plug is just hotter. May even be due to pre ignition caused by a glowing plug, leading to severe detonation. Not sure. But I have never seen it on a N/A or roots deal. Might comsider a colder plug.

Pullied Cobra and GT500 guys run the NGK TR7 pretty often. That's what I had in my 04 Cobra with 18psi and a 100 shot. You may ask the LS boards about it?

Yeah.asked em for a colder plug like u suggested.gna do that plus lower boost to 17lbs and rejet back to where i had it.it ran great on my 17lb tuneup so best get back to that and quit pushin my luck until i can build a forged piston motor over the winter.gta spare longblock i may stuff some mahle forged pistons into and try 20lbs against.17lbs on this stock stuff is my limit now lol
