Dampner question

    Default Dampner question

    I was looking at a dampner the other day that was a two piece deal and the outer ring was held on by rivots, (just like the one on my motor) Well this dampner basically came apart while the guy was making a pass My question is, what would happen to the engine during this situation ? Alot of vibration, and maybe damage the valve train from all the harmonics ? The center piece was intact that is pressed on to the crank, but the outside ring was just flopping around w/ all the rivots in the bilge ! So, I ordered a new dampner today, so I don't experience this......but to what extent would this damage parts ??? By the way this was a Professional Products dampner.

    If the damper comes apart yes you can hurt something. Professional Products do not have a good reputation. Go ATI or Romac.

    Not to mention punching a hole in the bottom of the boat. If you heard one came apart I'd get rid of the one on your boat.....soon

    Wayne I think the current damper on my boat is a Ford Racing part. Nice part its indexed every 90* makes setting valves easy,thats what I was doing last night.

    Pro products are a wreck waiting to happen,a stock balancer is better.For a short time that engine ran it wouldnt hurt anything.Unless its external balanced and it flung off the weighted part that could cause some trouble.Some blower engines dont run balancers just a hub to drive to belt and the belt absorbs some harmonics.I cant see how pro product junk cant be SFI approved and come apart so easy,who tests these things?

    Yes, their have been some Prof products dampers fly apart. Outer ring especially.

    Keep buying the fraudelent chinese stuff and it will get you or us at some point.

    Never heard of Romac, have to take a look at those.

    Ya, I pulled that thing off last night after I was done w/ valve lash, also
    I was going to get a ATI but its back ordered for 3 weeks so I went w/ that Ford Racing part also, its sfi approved, and looks like a nice piece. I would of lost my F-ing mind if I grenaded that dampner in the middle of a pass . You heading out for Labor Day ? Fri- Aha Quin, Sat- Lost Lake, Sun/Mon- Big River .... can't wait.

    It's damper, not dampner or dampener. Damping is what's done to vibrations. Dampening is what you end up doing to your shorts when you use a cheap damper.

    I was noticing on my balancer at idle that there was a slight wobble to it. When revved the wobble cleans up. Is this normal?

    The only ones I've ever seen wobble were old stockers on a SBC. Can you move the outer ring any with your hands? Romacs are nice units, there's also a company called Cyco that has a good piece.

    When and why did the Fluiddamper and those type go out of style ?

    Did they not work as advertized or what, or are they still good ?

    The fluidamper wears out the front main bearing because when it sits or is cold the fluid inside settles to the lowest part and throws the engine outta balance till it gets warm, at least that's what satan told me.
