    Default Dyno Session

    If I were going to Dyno a brand new engine build,What would I need to do to prepare for the session before I got there,to get the most out of My time?
    Would I need to have fired the engine?
    Would I need to have tHe carb or induction system dialed in?
    What are all the factors I need to consider before making a date?....Hal

    Can vary dyno shop to dyno shop, best to call and see whats beeing offered and for what price. If they tune vs you tune it, prices will vary, need to talk to your guy.

    Get it all hooked up on a stand or moto feet (prefered). You know, water, fuel, battery, start button, timing light, fire ext., ect. This way you can assess the carb and timing curve (if any), leaks, rattles, ticks, throttle response ect. This will optimize your time at the dyno. I usually do this and only pay for a half day, while doing all the tunning and labor myself. Let the opperator know if you want the tune safe, ultra safe, full tilt or grenade. And dont drink coffee or ingest any other stimulants as this will cause a complete disillusionment of build quality!

    The local(sorta) guy here charges 400 plus 200.00 for set up, is that about right?????????? I can't remember if that was all day or half? If that's too tacky too ask I'm sorry. Carry on.

    Bring extra spark plugs, oil and filter, and most importantly an extra carb if a known good one. In fact, ask the dyno shop if they have known good one's on hand that are the proper size/tune for your type build. This carb thing can save a day or two on the dyno also.

    Oh, bring 10-15 gallons of fuel that you are going to use in the boat.

    Ask what sensors they hook up to your engine. EGt's, wideband, air and fuel meters, etc and if they are in good working order.

    Will they let you do the tuning ? If you don't know how to tune will they do the tuning ? Get references on how will they can tune if you choose this. Can you bring someone who can ?

    What Machinehead said also.

    Also, best to find a dyno that is at or very near same elevation as what you run. Plus, try to do it same time of year that you run your boat. This will make the 'in boat' tuning easier by replicating same type of weather conditions. It will also give you more factual hp/torque #'s as it will be in the boat.

    Research what kind of dyno they use.

    Ex: say you run your boat near sea level and you go to a shop that consistently has conditions of 2800', but you run in conditions more like 500-700ft. That data and tune might not not do a whole lot for you.

    Hal,
    Rick Rapp moved from FL to Vegas 5 or 6 years ago. His company is Heads by Rick and was/is a very sharp guy who would be well qualified for a dyno session.
