    Default 496 build clearance ?'s

    Anybody here build a 496 BBC and have any clearance issues , block/pan ?
    I have a 10qt Dooley and was wondering what i would be getting into if i was to go this route....

    Cool , What about cam size. I already have my cam that i was going to use in my 468 , comp cam 11-324-4 is this cam still do able in a 496.

    Not in my opinion. Two different engines, two different cams. Typically I wouldn't use an off the shelf cam for anything. Not sure what you're looking for, but that's a fairly small hyd. flat tappet cam.

    Its just a 454 bored .060 over. No clearance issues to worry about and still enough meat on the walls so you dont have to worry.

    Regarding cam selection...tell us what your looking to do with and expect with the engine...list your combo thus far.

    1st you need to have some idea of what kind of power you want to make and what you think you want to realisticly spend on the build. Also consider what you want to use the boat for, then once you have that the parts selection will be alot easier to determine.

    Just want to build a healthy river boat , it will take me till next summer to get it finished , but im not in any hurry

    496 also has a 1/4" stroke. Still not a problem, though.

    The "standard" Dooley normally should clear 1/4" stroke, but naturally you should check before you bolt it on just to make sure.

    It depends on the crank and rod choice. Some rods, (bolts) will hit the block and need notches along the pan rail area. Also some crank counterweights will hit the bottoms of the pistons, depending on which rods you are using. Adding a .250 stroke can create some mechanical clearance problems. The critical clearances remain the same, ie: bearing, rings, and skirt to wall. Most long rods will allow the counter weights to clear piston skirt, but again, it depends on which ones you're using.........MP

    Does anyone offer a good strong rotating assembly for a 496 Crank, Rods, Pistons?
    I've got a 468 10.50:1 now but, I'm considering BIGGER and going w/a kit for more power. I'll use my current gen IV block already bored .060 over.

    Also, would my 049 heads worked over still be favorable to 6k or should I think about something else like aluminum for more compression possibilities?
    Compression for (93 pump gas), intake, carb/cam size considerations?

    I can put one together for you. Scat crank/rods, either Wiseco or KB forged pistons, rings and bearings. Good price. Balanced if you need. PM me if you're interested.

    The 049's would need considerable work to hang with a 496...better off getting something like the Canfield 310, or the Dart 320. INtake-something on the lines of the Edelbrock Vic Jr with an 850 Holley. Depending on the rpm you want, you can have somewhere in the 650-700hp range with little trouble. Therow a little compression in it and have even more.
