You have quench and squish. Squelch is something you tune out of a radio.
.040 is about the tightest you should attempt on a BBC unless you know what you're doing,

Light piston, tight piston clearance, super strong rod and a very stout crank you might get away with tighter.

O.k. Thank you for the answer, and the spell check (thought I was spelling that wrong) I'm right at deck height with the piston and I have a .039 gasket

That's a very common build. You might get away with the piston out of the hole .001-.002, but you need to start having your act together at that point,

Is there any performance to be gained running it close as long as nothing hits? I am .008 down with a .020 gasket closed chamber heads.
    thanx

I have never heard of anything less than .035 gaining anything, except the risk of having the piston hit the head.

Correction, it was .008 down with the old block and it had been decked. I seem to have forgotten to check the number with the new one....But same heads gaskets, always the same head gaskets. lol
Probably should have measured them too, they are probably .018 by now
