    Default Scoop Question?

Why would a forward facing air scoop cause an engine to lose rpm?

Turbulence in the airflow would be my first suspicion.

What was your setup before the scoop? What type of scoop now? Not enough clearance between inside of scoop and top of carb will choke it off , airflow doesn't do hard right turn. If scoop sits low relative to bodies in the seats could be obstructing flow. If the scoop could pack in air and create a lean condition. Anything interfering with the linkage now that wasn't there before?

Please be very careful with this on a carb motor!! I lost two 600" blower motors over a damn scoop!!!! I lost a motor from not letting oil temp warm up,(1) cold scuffed a piston. Motor did not have a innercooler so i added one to the build. So guess what did not fit any more???? My scoop..... So i took it off. So set motor all up new motor lasted about 5 hours(2) and deto a hole!! AAAAHHH So pulled motor and rebuilt again next motor last about 1 hour!!(3) Deto a hole!! So with my last build i added a wideband to the boat after a huge dyno tune again and AFRS right at 11.5 Put motor in boat and took out, WOWOWOWOW My AFRS where in the high 13s. I did not know what the hell is up, good fuel PSI, everything perfect!! In the mean time my scoop is getting fixed to fit boat. So the scoop is done, i put it on the boat and out to the water i go. PERFERCT!! AFRS 11.5!!! With no scoop the air going across the top of the carbs was pulling the fuel out and leaning the motor out bad!!!And melting my custom JE Pistons fastt!!!! So now i am about 20 Hours on the new motor and she is perfect!! Add a AFR gage it will tell you where your RPM went/are!!

Thank you Skydog P.S. DAMN SCOOP!!!!!!!
