If I have my dots lined up on timing gears and I move it one tooth so dots are not lined up how many degrees does it change? Having trouble degreeing the cam,

You don't degree a cam with sprocket teeth. Its done with either offset bushings in the cam sprocket, with a multi key crank sprocket.

One tooth on the cam sprocket would move the cam 7.2 degrees, or 14.4 crank degrees. I don't think you want to move the cam that much.

If you moved the cam 7*, you moved it 14 crank degrees. Not sure how you time a cam, but I always do it based on crank degrees.

It the cards says the intake lifter rise is .050 at 32* BTDC, and I want it 4* advanced, I move the cam 2*. that puts the intake lifter rise at 36 cranks degrees BTDC.

Moving a cam 7 degrees is a shit load.

If I leave the gear set at zero at .050 it's a few degrees after tdc

Back to why I was asking about moving one tooth on the gears to get the adjustable gears back somewhere closer to zero

Sounds like you need an offset bushing.

Any time you have a cam that is that far off, the first thing you have to ask is what am I doing wrong.

Very first thing is that your degree wheel is at O* when you are a verified TDC. Get that wrong, and nothing you do will be right, even when you think is. The very accuracy of what you are attempting to do is based around that one thing. Get it wrong, and even when the numbers chive, it will be wrong.

Second, if the heads are off this thing, you are using the #1 intake lifter, right? Its NOT the furthest forward lifter.. although your numbers would be more screwed up than that, just thought it worth mentioning.

If this is a multi key crank gear, you are more than likely using the wrong mark for what ever key slot you are using.

Heads are off, second lifter in, double checked tdc 5 times, piston stop, dial indicator, off to work calling cam guy in a bit, and only one key way on crank gear it is a comp cam set top gear is adjustable top gear.

Its why I like Donovan and Milodon gear drives. Crank goes here, cam goes there and slam the cam on. Timing marks? I don't need no stink'n timing marks.

Got it, operator error, did not have the plunger centered in the lifter, so that got it off, than after that I took the plunger out of the lifter pocket and set it on the top lifter edge, but when the lifter goes down when I thought I was on the the base of the cam (zero) the lifter recess down past the lifter bore so the plunger was on the block casting, so I never had a reading off of base circle, thank you agian for all your help, bobby
