    Default Holley Secondaries Problem

    Situation:
    - Holley 4160 on a 460 ford.
    - During rebuild it was obvious that the secondaries have never been opening(very stuck shut).

    Problem:
    - Post rebuild the secondaries won't open.
    - With the checkball removed, secondaries do open.

    Guesses:
    - Leak at cork gasket, its brand new so I doubt it.
    - Checkball groove that lets the air pass by it not large enough? Anyone have had this problem?

You didn't get the diaphragm in right or its torn. (you did replace it right?)
Remove the vacuum motor, and shoot spray carb cleaner in the hole that the cork gasket goes over, and check to see if it comes out of the venture area of the primaries.

Diaphram is new. I will double check for any damage.

Shooting carb cleaner into hole, spray comes out of hole in secondaries and primary venturi area.

Yeah the secondaies act as booster for the vacuum signal once they start to open.
Vacuum secondaries work physics. Like gravity, its as reliable as a rack.
So if they don't open, you need to find out why. But it has to be a vacuum leak from the side of the carb where the cork gasket goes, to the top side of the diaphragm. How did you determing they aren't opening now. I understand they were frozen before, but how do you know they are opening now?
Also, if the spring is too heavy for the size of the engine verses the size of the carb, they won't open too far. How far depends on the spring and the size of the engine and carb. Small block with a 850 VS and a heavy spring might not move the secondaries at all.

    I did the following:
    Put the checkball back in.
2-4-c grease on upper side of diaphram to help it seal.
2-4-c grease on gasket between secondary housing and the carb.
Got the holley spring kit, replaced the existing yellow spring with a short yellow.

Did another lake test and the secondaries are now opening. Going by feel, I would say they are opening a little too early and too far. At full throttle, I get a bog. Going to go back to the full yellow spring, but using the new one in the kit.

Thanks for the help. I probably should have changed one thing at a time. Not sure what I did that made the difference.
