    Default Cylinder hone for re-ring??

    I had my motor torn down to a short block because of a head change and I found a few things that made me say humm, So I went ahead and tore it all the way down to do a thorough inspection. Since I've pulled the pistons, I'm going to replace the rings even though this motor has very few hours on it, maybe 15. My question is honing /de-glazing the cylinders, am I being stupid for not taking the block to the machine shop so they can use a torque plate and hone for new rings? I have a quality blade hone with a set of fine stone blades on it, and I just did a very light hone, maybe 8 quick strokes per hole to give a fresh surface to seat the rings, Total Seal Classic Plasma-moly rings. Now I'm second guessing myself. This is a Chevy 505 with a 671 blower. If this were a low hp street motor I was freshening up I wouldn't worry about it but??? What do the voices of experience say?

    I would rather have a correctly honed cylinder with the right hatch pattern and the right stone with no plate, than the wrong pattern and wrong stone with a plate.
    You say its a "fine stone", what ever means, and its quality blade hone. Like a Sunnen, or Lisle 15000 with 2 fixed stones, and 2 brushes, or a spring loaded tri hone?

    It's not the lisle 15000, that's a nice hone. It's a lisle 3 blade spring hone with a set of 400 grit stones.

    I haven't used 400 since chrome rings. 400 grit left as is, is enough to chisel the plasma moly right off the rings
    Take it to a shop along with THE SPECS FOR YOUR RINGS!!

    Ya, that's what I'm tripping about, I'm trying not to be a cheap ass. But, on the other hand, the money I've spent over the last couple years building this boat only to have it torn down so soon is hard to swallow. My wallet is taking a beating like an "E" st hooker who held out money from her pimp. I'm still trying to recover from popping for a set of AFR's. Disassembling the whole motor wasn't in the plans. I'm just trying to stop the bleeding before I totally bleed out.

    If the rings don't seal well, and you have a bunch of blow by,, you will be tearing it apart again?

    My pop owned and operated an automotive machine shop for thirty years, my uncle (his older brother, was his machinist for 15 of those years). The one thing that stands out that he said to me years ago that I have repeated literally hundreds of times out loud and probably thousands of times in my head is;

    "If you can't afford to do it right the first time, you really can't afford it the second time".

    IMHO the best parts in the world don't mean squat if they are not assembled correctly, basically makes super high quality paper weights. A few bucks now does not get any cheaper later.

    If you bought new AFR's you best have someone check the guide clearances if this is for a marine deal.

    Man, get ready to bleed a little more...I took my stuff to the BUILDER go to guy...cost me a few intake gastets,a few set of head gaskets
    many hrs. clearing push-rod isuses..oh yea some carbs too.cause you get 3 pulls on this dyno..no tuning

    I appreciate the responses. In hind sight, I'm not even sure why I asked, I already new what the right thing to do was. I'm the one usually telling people "do right the first time". I guess it was a case of wishful thinking and trying to be cheap.

    Having them checked was what caused a big part of my heart burn. I started to order a bare set of heads so I could have my machinist build them, and when I asked about the price of intake valves, I let them talk me into buying their "Upgraded head package". They said it would be cheaper in the long run and I would get a set of fully CNC'd heads built by AFR with valves, springs, titanium retainers, all upgraded from their base package, set up for my cam specs, which I supplied them.

    When my guy checked them out, I was informed the springs were wrong for my cam, and if I ran them they would play hell with my valve train. These springs were for something more like an .800 lift cam and my cam is only .714. Something about when they were set to proper seat pressure for my application, they were still over a 1/4" away from coil bind. This meant I got to buy another set of springs, retainers, locks, the whole shebang. The extra money plus the egg on my face for not just ordering bare heads like I was supposed to must be clouding my judgement.
