NOS! Ive never messed with the stuff but was curious, for instance on a stock 454 how big of a shot could you put to it(safely), how long could you run it, and is there a safe rpm to turn it on/off before you start buying parts?

A safe 150hp tuneup shld be ok sammy.jus use a fuel pressure safety switch/wheel button/wot switch for added protection.never hurts to enrichen the nitrous with racefuel or avgas

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

This like those stone stock wrecking yard 5.3 making 1200 HP you see on You Tube type question.
Back in the day when about the only person missing with the stuff was Dale Armstong in his "Canuck" Chevy II running out of Ron Hemmels 10,000RPM Speed Shop long before Mike Thermos knew what the stuff was outside of a dentist's office.

A friend had one of those gawd awful POS 75 Mustang II Cobras with a 122 HP 302 SBF in it. He was going to drop a stroked 351 Cleveland in the pile with a T ram and two N2O plates pushing about 150 each. He thinks he is Dyno Don.
So why not have some fun with it before we pull the SBF. So on goes a plate it along with a 351 W Marine cam I had laying around,(basically, the same as the first 5.0 HO cam) and off we go to Lions. 5 runs and the C4 transmissions tounge is hanging out, but the engine is fine.
So he has this beefed C6 that he was going to use behind the Cleveland, so in it goes. Back to Lions the next weekend, and 6 runs the rearend takes a dive. WE ARE TRYING TO BLOW UP THE ENGINE HERE!!!!

So in goes a Detroit locker he has planned, and we try again. 6 runs later, the crank broke hitting second.

Heres the kicker. He spends 6 months getting the Cleveland in it and setup, and on the very first run, getting ready to hit 3rd at 8500, it splits a cylinder wall and it unloads. Blows so bad it literally blows the pan wide open and every drop of water and oil comes out. His rear tires hit it at about 110-120, car goes sideways and starts barrel rolling down track.
When it was all over, he saved one carb, the distributer, and the rear end pumpkin. Everything else was total loss including the trans, rear end housing and axles. Onto a flat bed and off to the scrap yard.

So to answer question Sammy, it all depends.

I never cared for the stuff, and never ran it, never will. If for no other reason than I have seen friends addicted like they were main lining herion and can't kick it. I like my power adders anytime, ALL THE TIME.

I never ran NOS and no nothing about it .. I have been thinking about putting it on the race boat and only using it when needed .. What type of system is good to use on a Tunnel Ram ?? I wouldn't be spraying no more than a 150/175 shot .. I'm running a MSD digital 6AL, would I have to change that ?? On a small shot like that would you have to pull timing out of the motor ?? I'm running a Holly Black fuel pump, would I need another fuel pump for the NOS or can I plum off that ??

    Thanks

    Good story GN

Mike doesnt the digital 6 have a built in retard function? 150-200hp id run a pair of plates at that level no need for multiport.holley black wld be pushing it for motor n nos, i always ran a seperate holley black for the nitrous only.last setup i ran was 2stage 500hp total and i cld maintain 9-10psi using a holley blk on nitrous alone while flowing over a bowl

You can retard the timing up to 10 degrees with the digital 6. That's what I use with an Edlebrock 250 shot and I use a Holley red just for the nitrous. I only run the nitrous for 2 to 3 seconds in 1320

What about a N20 controller for some of the bigger hits? is it needed in a jet to ease into it? Will the pump unload or cavitate like a tire will break loose? we are putting a 250+ fogger system on the new motor but have never played with it in a boat.

at what point(hp shot) do you have to start retarding the timing? or is mandatory?

So I have the same ignition and nitrous set up as you. So you pull 10degrees out with a 250shot? What size Nos and fuel jets do you run and what do you set your flowing fuel PSI @?
    Thanks.

I'm running the digital 6AL, its different than the digital 6 .. The one i have took the place of the old 6AL box ..

Is it a must to retard the timing on a 150 shot ??

Trevor, right now I have 28 - 20 jets @ 6 1/4 flowing pressure. Still messing with pressure. And yes, pull 2 degrees for every 50 hp. I said that I run the N20 for 2 to 3 seconds in 1320. If we pair up on the river you can bet it's on at the hit!
