    I have a 429 BBF i dont know if it is a car or truck motor... what i want to know is where the head and block casting numbers are located ?? And what site to look the numbers up on once i get them

    Cyl head number is located just below the valve cover rail between the 2nd and 3rd sparkplug. It will look something like this: C8AE-A or D0VE-C for early style and D3VE-A2A for later style heads. Block no. can be found behind the starter on the pass. side of the block. Post your numbers as there are enough people here that can I.D. your engine.

    The 385 Series 429 passenger engines were manufactured from 1968-1973 and were never available in pickup trucks.

    The 429 industrial/commercial truck engines (F600 dump truck and above, etc) were manufactureed from 1979-~1996 and, although they are a 385 Series based engine, they are essentially a different animal altogether. Very few of their parts can be considered usable in a high performance build...but some parts are usable (most need some modification).

    The year of manufacture of your engine is not quite as important as the engineering revisions, or "casting numbers."

    The cylinder head casting numbers are located on the outside of the head, along the valve cover mounting rail and between the 3rd and 4th exhaust ports. They are visible simply by raising the hood and looking at the engine. You should be able to find a cast-in alphanumeric number, possibly one of the following:
    • C8VE-E
    • C9VE-A
    • D0VE-C
    • D2VE-AA
    • D3VE-A2A

    Or, it may appear similar to one of the above numbers but a little different.

    The block casting number is located on the outside of the engine, at the rear of the cylinder bank, behind the starter motor and reads vertically. There, you should be able to find a cast-in alphanumeric number, possibly one of the following:
    • C8VE-B
    • C9VE-B
    • D0VE-A
    • D1VE-A2B
    • D9TE-AB

    Or, it may appear similar to one of the above numbers but a little different.

    Post the numbers you see and I'll tell ya what you have to work with.

    I found some numbers,See if this sounds right.HEAD#DVE-A2A BLOCK#DIVE-A28
    What year is the block? Car or truck? Is it a 2 bolt or four bolt? Is it worth building? It's in a '69 Ford short bed c6 automatic 5:14 rear end running 6:99 in an 8th or a mile Thinking about building it putting it in my jet boat

    Your 2-bolt block was used in 1971-1978 production engines, the heads are actually D3VE-A2A (although the 3 is a blank space in your castings) and were used from 1973-1985.

    Based on the details that you have provided, my best guess--without knowing actual date codes--is that your block and heads are early-to-mid 1970's...likely they are 1972-1973-1974 castings. As noted before, it really doesn't matter when your block and heads were cast (your provided engineering revisions tell the main story about block and head design), but if you care to know actual casting dates, then the block casting date is in the lifter valley and the head casting dates are in the valve train area. Both are alphanumeric and will likely be something like 2B6 or 3G25, etc. I'll bet that your heads, although D3VE's, are not drilled for Thermactor (smog pump passages are not drilled in the exhaust ports).

    The block can handle well over 600-700 HP for most people that have a fair idea of what the hell they are doing (substantially more hp is possible); the heads will support around 500 +/- although more is possible with a LOT of machining (at which point most people use that machining money to invest in better heads).

    Also, one of the crankshaft counterweights normally has alphanumeric markings stamped on it's leading or trailing edge (usually the 3rd counterweight from the snout), and these markings identify whether it's a 429 or 460 crankshaft.

    429 = 4U, 4UA or 4UAB

    460 = 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB or 2YABC....or 3Y or 3YA.

    Also, for quick identification of the crankshaft, you may look for the nodule or embossment between the first main journal and counterweight. The 460 is embossed there, while the 429 is not:

    Ford trucks did not have 460's until sometime after your engine was produced. They were standard in 1979-up F250's.

    An older design and not my first choice in a BBF cylinder head, but it really depends on what your are building. What do you want to build?

    500 hp is a walk in the park with aluminum heads, even with factory iron.

    Pump gas? Stroker? Cam/Lifter type? OT headers? One carb or two?

    There is no D8VE-A2A cylinder head, this is a poorly marked D3VE-A2A head.
