    Default Confusion

OK...so I have $1200 to spend. I've found a set of Edelbrock Performer RPM heads that I can pick up for that price.

Should I get those heads with my hyd. flat tappet cam that I already have? Or should I spend the money on a roller cam and run the '049' heads?

Plan on adding about another $500 bucks to the Edelbrock heads, to make them last in a marine engine. The guides need to be reamed, and inconel exhaust valves should be used.

I would vote for the Edelbrock's for now because of the instant weight savings!
Then, you can save up for that roller, and have someone work the Aluminum heads at the same time you up grade the cam. It will be allot easier (and maybe even cheaper) to find a good head guy that wants to port the aluminum ones as opposed to grinding for days on the iron ones.

At the same time get rid of that thermostat and you'd be doing it!

Don't you need special pistons for those Edelbrock heads?? Better add that to your $1200
I would go with the 049's and a roller myself. Actually I kinda did, but my heads are 702's
    (396 heads)

I think the poll would have been more accurate had you said 049's with 2.19/1.88 valves installed. All you need is 1 more head to match the 1 you already have.

What's the difference in chamber sizes, what chamber size is your current cylinder heads, and what's the current compression ratio?

What's the current valve sizes, what are the valve sizes in the Edelbrocks, and what are the valve sizes of the prospective 049's?

What's the current cam profile (gross lift/lift @ .050/gross dur/dur @ .050/centerline) and whats the prospective roller cam profile?

    What's the intended application?

I'm sure I missed some more pertinent questions other than listed above but no one should be able to make a accurate recomendation on what's better for your application without all of the facts!

Either way you'll need a set of springs. They are not interchanable between the flat tappet and the roller. What are the RPM ratings of the different heads? And where in that "happy place" will your jet allow the engine to rev?.........IMO, a roller and the stout springs you will be able to run will not be as much of an improvement with the jet as with a prop. Jets are real good governors, and it takes a bunch of power to overcome that. So, I would stick with the flat tappet cam type and look for the best bang for the buck in cylinder heads that meet your needs. I am not endorsing the Edlebrocks one way or the other as I don't know all the particulars about them. I would look into some really nice cast iron heads with decent size valves and pocket work. Later, when you get flush, build a completely different motor with all the trick stuff you can afford. Keep the existing engine absolutely complete, every bolt. That way, when the new, super powerful engine has problems, and it will, you can re install the existing engine and still have fun on the water. Believe me, you will not regret having a good running, but less powerful, complete engine on "stand by"...........Ray

Just me but, wouldn't he be better off with another head to match the GOOD one?
