    Default Carb Questions!

How much does a 950HP Holley flow? And does an annular booster carb work well on a boat?

Low 800's. An 850 with dog leg boosters flows more.

Annular boosted are only used if needed.

    Colby,
I have used Lance Patton formerly of Reed Carburetion for many years. Lance to me is one of the most down to earth real guys you will ever meet and worked many years under the guidance of John Reed. Lance works closely with many marine jet guys and does extremely good work. I have sent few board members to him and they all have been very happy with his work. He will provide flow at 20.4 inches which will give you realistic number of what the carb will do when fuel is present.

    His number is 678 984 0106

When are annular boosters need? I've got a Holley Dom. 1050 8896-1 with annular boosters. I thought they allowed for more cfm through the carb than dog legs.

I run only annular discharge carbs, they give great acceleration and top speed. The fuel is misted and flows from a higher level. I believe nascar also uses them also.

No. They are more restrictive to air than dog legs.

Annular boosters are more sensitive (more psi drop thru booster for given amt of air passing thru) and thus will add more fuel. This can be good with large cams and/or cyl heads and/or intake manifolds and/or going larger on the carb itself.

When used on an application normal boosters would work correctly, they can 'overfuel' especially as the rpms go up.

Basically, a motor with a very weak signal to the carb can usually benefit from annular boosters especially used in a lot of lower speed conditions.

    Edit in:

Alright, I am not much of a carb guy, but I figure I can share what I know from personal experience.

I have annular boosters in a Demon carb on my small block v-drive. It does fatten up a touch in the higher RPM's, but it really helps out for part throttle stuff (like pulling skiers, tubes or knee boarders) in spite of having a decent size roller cam and a bigger carb than necessary. For unique applications like that it is wonderful, but for most applications I would say it is not necessary.

The fattening up on the top end can be dealt with by air bleeds and emulsion jets. There no part of the fuel curve in modern Holley type carb that can't be fixed. It just comes down to bitching rather than fixing. But I agree, annulars can be a big help with getting the carb on the main circuit sooner.
