Default Newbie with Banks intercooler question

Hey everybody, just found this site yesterday, been on OffshoreOnly for years but there isn't much turbo info. This is awesome.

I just picked up a cheap Banks single carb system and it's got this puny little intercooler on it. I've never even seen another one like it. Does this thing actually cool or should I try to find the larger banks intercooler or an aftermarket one?

It's going on a talldeck 495 stroker with moldex crank, carillo rods, KB pistons etc.etc. around 500-525hp N/A. CR is 9:1 and I want to run the cheapest gas possible. Also, running a TRS drive so the 5lbs it's set at will be the max I want. Funny, I started off just looking for a set of mufflers to quiet it down a tad, and ended up with this!

I will be keeping an eye on this one. I have some banks manifolds, and risers set up for waste gates (most banks aren't from what I understand). Anyways are you going blow through or draw through?? Sounds like draw thru

That is a regular single radiator Banks intercooler. The dual radiator is probably preferrable but the small one will probably work for low boost. The turbos are not as much "set" for 5 lbs as that happened to be what they made with the previous combination. Depending on your camshaft, and your 9-1 static compression, and larger 496 cubic inch engine, you may see different results. Plan on running conservative ignition timing (28-maybe 30 degrees), and make certain that you have adequate fuel delivery and pressure.

This is the smallest one I've ever seen, other than one that was on my mom's K-car 20 yrs ago.

I'll be running it as designed, again, not looking for max power, just an extra 200hp or so, which will be maxing the TRS/tranny to the limit. The guy I bought this from builds big HP offshore engines for a living and he's had this system on 2 of his own boats w/ similar specs in the past 25 yrs, so he's supplying the 850 w/ the correct jets so HOPEFULLY there will be limited dialing in time. We shall see.

Running a CCams XM278- 234/244 dur and .564-.566 lift. I know turbos like stock cams but I don't see a big problem w/this, esp w/ only 4-6 psi and some intercooling, Thoughts?

I've got the same manifold, turbo, ic setup on my 460 ford. Boost is around 8-10 and it made over 700 hp with modified PI heads. The IC is a bit small for the size motor/amount of boost and can become heat soaked but after a solid WOT run all it takes is a short "cruise" to bring everything back into spec for me.
