    Default Rate of oil flow?

How fast does the oil flow through the motor? Most of us know what it looks like when you crank it over without an oil filter, but with one on, how fast? So let's set this up.

    Operating oil temp 210*
    Straight 50wt
    Standard paper filter
    3500 rpm
    Standard oil pump
How fast will it circulate and filter 8 quarts?

I know how fast it flows when my cousin doesn't connect the output line to the motor and I hit the dry sump pump with a drill. It's amazing how much oil came out!!!

From what I've seen around the lifters, it's pretty damn fast!!!

You're kidding? It's the fastest way to drain a milkshake pan that doesn't have a proper drain.

I may be wrong about the number, but believe a hi volume BBC pump put out about 19-20 gmp at 6000 R's, most of which is bypassed back in the pickup area of the pump. The actual amount that flows thru your motor really depends on the clearances more than anything else. Remember, it a positive displacement pump. It turns and moves X amount of oil for every revolution. If the motor can't handle that much oil thru it because you are running a tight motor, and wimpy ass standard size filter with 10 micron element, most of it will get bypass back into the pickup siide of the pump.

That's only because in your case, it freezes before it hits the bottom of the boat

Thanks GN, that answers a lot of it. But, I don't spend a whole lot of time in the 6000+ range. At that speed, I'm aware that I'm bypassing the filter, but is it flowing thru the filter at 3500 with 75psi?

i dont know how fast it flows, but, i do know, if u break a line from the motor to the oil pressure gage, it will dump 8 qts of oil all over ur motor under the hood before u can shut it off!!! & thats a mess!

A typical BBC with .0028 mains, .0020 rods will flow between 8-9.5 gals./minute at 75psi. That is assuming the lifter bores and cam bearing clearances aren't to sloppy and the distributor is o-ringed. There are a few things other than the mentioned that will effect this, but main bearing clearances alone can have a huge effect, and I have seen a change of over 1gal/minute @ 90 psi from an addition of just .0004 in clearance at only a 2.125 shaft diameter! As the shaft diameter goes up, so will this change.

This is HUGE! Way more than most people ever think about. And I was wrong about the BBC pump flow rate, that was for a BBF, of course they need it with the deisel sized mains they have Although none of the motors actually flow as much or oil (or at least shouldn't)as the pump can move.
