If it has a mechanical fuel pump mounting boss it's most likely a MkIV (although some Gen VI blocks had one too). There's also a sequence code stamped into a small machined surface right above the timing chain cover that will tell you the factory, month, date and year that the block was made at.

If it's a 2 bolt main it's definitely a MkIV. Gen V and VI blocks are all 4 bolt main. With MkIV blocks, some were a 2 bolt and some were a 4 bolt.

MkIV blocks also used a 2 piece rear main seal while Gen V and VI used a 1 piece rear main seal.

    Hope this helps.

I was working on the Hallett floors and rear seat and pondering if the engine is gen 5 or 6.
Mortec will give me a answer.

I have NEVER owned a MK IV that didn't have a 7.4 on the side. I know they all don't, but a ton of them do. The timing cover is the easiest way to tell a GEN 6

Yep, mine is cast 7.4 as well, 1977 Mk-IV.

But I would have to count on both hands to get that big a number....pointing with 5 fingers at once I would probably get all confused.

Right rear of block, just under the deck will give you an I.D. number that you can check on Mortec. M
