    Default Ignition Upgrade Question

I've got a MSD -7ML2 ignition controller .Im converting over to E85 and wondering is the ML7 enough spark to make the Ethanol light properly ? If Not ? What would be the best upgrade and still keep my MSD Dizzy ?

    It'll be good.

That's what I run with e85 and never had a problem.
I replace the spark plugs after 3 or 4 years because it seemed like the thing to do.
The old plugs still looked fine.

Figured it would be , just checking before I drop some more coin on a new coil then find out later it's not gonna be hot enough

The coil I've been using is the MSD 8252, the HVC BLASTER which MSD recommended.
It says for use with the 6 series.

I've been running it for a number of years and they may recommend something else now, but at the time I talked to them, the boat was N/A and would be used for occasional cruising.
They make another coil that produced a somewhat stronger spark, but MSD recommended it be used only for DRAG RACING.

The coil I use is certainly adequate for my engine and I turn it 7500-7700.
I'd suggest contacting MSD for their recommendation if you don't get other opinions here.

When I switched boats the old one had a 6 box and the new one was 7LM, I had the HVC-II (8253) and they said to use it, starts on the first crank and runs great.

Here's MSD coil compatibility chart. It makes life somewhat simple.

    http://www.msdignition.com/instructi...ompability.pdf

Now If that's not good enough.....

Summit has a comparison feature that you can compare a number of coil parameters, voltage, collapse time, resistance, etc. so no matter what you have for a CD box, the parameters of the coil are correct for the box you have...

Seems that the wrong resistance coils will fry some components within the box over time. Seems coils vary greatly, so be aware of what you piece together. These boxes aren't getting any cheaper...

Looks like an excellent choice of coils for the 7 box.

How soon are you going to have that thing ready for the water, and are you Racing (sanctioned) or Playing?

It will be race legal as far as SDBA rules , M/E class or faster ...I might buzz Marble Falls track if I get the bug just to see what it runs and get recorded on paper .
main build was focused on being a quick lake Rod ...there's several guys that race in P/E class that still run the lake here ...just wanna hang with my homies !

Are the P/E guys running jets?
You certainly shouldn't have trouble running M/E or faster with what you have.

I'll be interested in hearing how your ride turns out, and I think you'll not be disappointed using the e85.
Outside of using a little more fuel and going a little faster, I don't think you'll find it much different from running gasoline.
Remember, it's the same stuff that most new cars can burn.

Not running alcohol but 110 Sonoco. I use a MSD-7ML-2, #7561 launch controller, Power Pro coil and 5551 dist. in the 10 second class. It`ll throw nearly 2 inch HOT, KILLER spark. Any upgrades in my future won`t be the ignition.

Wow, with that hot killer spark your motor would run GREAT with NOS . You'd be running the 9.0s easy . Click image for larger version.
