    Default Best ignition box.

Looking for opinions on the best ignition box. Looking for something simple, reliable and just plain works.

I have not had much luck with MSD boxes, what else is out there.

The MSD all in one distributors are supposed to be less troublesome. I am getting ready to put a DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) unit in an engine I am putting together for a guy. No box, HEI style.

I had an MSD all in one fail. You have to carry a spare. I ended up with an MSD distributer and Crane spark box. Delco makes a good marine dizzy with module built in if you aren't running boost.

Good to know that, but there can be failures with any ignition. My opinion is that the boxes have too high of a rate of failure, particularly the newer ones. I had an owner of a prominent west coast marine business tell me he has experienced a terrible failure rate with the later marine boxes, when I was calling to order a replacement for one that had gone bad in a friend's boat.

On that note, he did suggest the MSD Digital 6 box, and it has been working fine for a season now, comparable pricing to the marine box, but the wiring is a little different, so I had to take apart and make up plugs to work with his boat wiring.

Thanks guys for the information. Like I said previously, I have not had much luck with MSD boxes, both on cars and on boats so I'm looking for more reliable options. I had heard good things about Crane, maybe I will try one of those. I was thinking the HI-6R model, it does not look like Crane has a marine-specific box anymore.

One of the issues with the MSD boxes is that they are extremely voltage dependent, so you must follow the instructions and use proper gauge wires, with good connections. When I installed the Digital 6 box, I noted that it is supposed to be able to function at a much lower voltage than the 6AL and 6M boxes.

MSD is on it 3rd owner in 10 years. If you want a good box that you don't have to worry about then go Daytona Sensors. We tested the same box on a sprint car, then a drag car and then a dyno. For under $600 you get a 100% USA made product that is a digital CDI, Coil, 16MB of data recording memory, and a USB cord for programming.

Crane is a very reliable box, never had any issues. MSD is horrible.

I have the Daytona box. I run a map sensor and made a 3D timing map.
Between 4 of us (8 boxes) we had 2 dead boxes.
tech support guy passed away but he was a major PITA to deal with. Not sure who does the tech support guy as he was the engineer.
Idle stabilization and the other features are nice but it isn`t plug and play.

Just a heads up, the founder of Daytona Sensors was the engineer that designed the Crane Ignition line. We have sold around 30 of the DS boxes with no issues in QC. I have had a few customers that complained about the programming but after the initial stuff was completed they were happy with the performance of the ignitions.
