Do i need to worry about it? I pulled my motor 3 months ago and drained all the fluids while i worked on my enterior.. Im about to throw it back in the boat and fill it all back up. Should i take any special precautions?

excellent. thats what i needed to know...

Now.. How does one prime the engine...? Im assuming you yank the dizzy and use a drill some how.. What i dont understand is how you engage that pump? is there a special tool?

And pull the plugs. That way theres no pressure on the bearings and it spins easier and faster.

Delemorte You can make a tool out of an old dizzy. Just remove every thing on top, rotor, points/reluctor, advance mech, and put a hose clamp on it so the shaft doesn't fall out. Then put it in the engine, hook a drill to it and pump it up. I usually turn the engine over by hand as the drill spins the pump.

Buy the tool, it's like $20 bucks max and you can find them cheaper than that. Pull the diz, slide the tool into the dizz hole and hook up your drill. Your oil pump shaft is spun by the distributor, this tool reaches down and grabs the oil pump shaft and spins it.

I dont know about the whole pulling the plugs and ignition method. sure there's not alot of load on the main/rod bearings but still why... what about the cyl walls and the rings scrapin down them... And unless you have hyd lifters the pressure of the valve train is still pressin up against the valves, rockers, lifters and cam! I prime the shit out of mine, i can pretty much kill a cordless drill battery with a prime :)

if you do a normal winterizing of your boat/watercraft
you would have pulled the plugs and squirted a little top end lube
in the cylinders and rolled it over a few times already when you changed the oil and filter after the season.

come spring time roll the engine over a few time to get oil pressure
and install plugs, good to go...:)hand

Don't make this more difficult than it is.....
pull the plugs, disconnect the power to the distributor or battery side of coil and spin the engine over with the starter until you get oil pressure.

because like River Rat said, the engine must be rotated while the oil is flowing. then you have to set the timing and if you have a ford
you take the chance of dropping the oil pump drive

I fell most damage to a new motor happens in the first minute of motors start up, i prime system with a oil priming tank or priming tool on drill motor with a 1/2 drill ... pull spark plugs after i get full pressure i will turn eng over with a breaker bar until oil runs out the rocker arms then i can put the dist in and fire the motor.

hope this helps. roger

Being as how he is unfamiliar with distributor priming, I would agree to keep it simple. Especially after only 3 months. Plugs out, coil disabled, crank in small sessions. 5 seconds or so at a time to not heat up the starter. See the gauge move and all should be well.
