    Default Oiling problems

    We lit my new alky motor off today. Before hand I primed the motor with a drill on the oil pump till we got good oil press (70psi). Started it the oil press gauge went to 80, ran it mabey a minute checked timing shut it down pulled the valve covers to check things out, one side full of oil outher side bone dry. Pulled the mag went after it with the drill again, spun it for a good five minutes, gauge shows good p.s.i. and nothing on the dry side. Never heard of this. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks in advance for any help with this problem.

    Have you pulled the intake to see if the lifters on the dry side are getting oil?

    Any chance the plug behind the timing gear got left out?

    Have not pulled the intake yet. looked inside with a light the lifters have oil on top of them from what I can see so far. Going to call the builder in the morning to see what he thinks.

    What block is it (GM or aftermarket), who was the supplier, what machinist prep'd the block, what kind of heads and is the oiling problem on the even side?

    Glad to hear that. Was the problem on the even side?

    Yes it was. The dist was not down all the way, was told the slip collar was set for a tall deck and was not. So was all my mistake for not checking it out. Thanks for the replys.

    Make sure and check during the next few startups that the proper amount of oil is getting over to the even back side just to make sure that what you described is all that it really was. Just suggesting caution, nothing more.

    Hopefully you got it fixed. However, if you had oil on 1 side of the engine but not the other, seems the oil pump had to be pumping even if it wasn't fully engaged. Did it show pressure when you started it? At any rate, I'd be careful for the next couple starts just to be sure it's fixed.
    That said, back when we ran restrictors in the block for roller cams, it took longer than I thought it should to get oil up to the top of the engine. Might be something to consider. I guess nowadays people don't use them as much so you have more oil on top to cool the springs. At least that's what we were advised to do in our new combo...Good luck.
