    Default MSD Digital Ignition Boxes

Looking to upgrade my ignition box. considering the MSD digital 7 programmable. Anyone have any inputs or complaints??? Is it worthwhile to upgrade or is it better to add boxes such as launch control and retard boxes for specific purposes.

add it, this box saves alot of wiring labor and any problems with signal bleeding into the other controllers, i have to digital 7 and we have alot a success with it, i didn't wire it up and i don't do any programing of it, i'm just the monkey bihind the wheel that drives down the track. the people i know that have swithed and got rid of alot of other box's are happy, just my .02

I don't know about the Digital 7, but we ran the Digital 6 in our 9 second SBC drag car. Had all the features we needed and worked flawlessly. No issues at all.
We tried the Crane stuff before we went to the MSD Digital 6. This was a while back, around 98-99 and hopefully Crane stuff is better. In a nutshell, we lost half a season trying to get the Crane system to work. We put a complete system in the car; box, distributor, coil...everything. It wouldn't start. We fussed with it thinking we had it wired wrong, made literally dozens of calls to the tech dept. Over the next few months, we exchanged everything, nothing really helped. We finally got the car to run, but just barely. Then the distributor exploded inside. I boxed everything up and shipped it back to the mail order place I bought it with a lenghty letter detailing the entire saga. I also cc'ed Crane. That's when we bought the MSD stuff. Dropped it in the car and it ran like it should without a single call to the tech line. I hope they are better now, but I'd NEVER touch anything except MSD for an electronic ignition.
While I'm on the subject, at the time all this BS was going on, I was a regular tech contributor to Super Stock and Bracket Racing USA magazines. I asked my editors if they'd run a story about what I'd gone through. They both laughed at the idea. As you can guess, Crane was a major advertiser in both. First time I was ever squashed on a tech idea because of ad dollars...

I like the idea of running what everyone else around you is running (MSD) so if you need help or a spare its there for you. I run a regular 6 ignition with all the goodies (digital retard, start retard and launch con.) connected to it, digital 7 has everything built in. Your out of luck if you have a problem with the 7 where I can change things out with spares if I need to but the 7 is a better unit. If I remember correctly the 7 has double the energy. You will be fine if you dont want to drop the money on the 7 but if you have the denero get it now so you dont have to rip into the wiring later.

Digital 7 has built in start retard, timing curves, launch control, nitrous timers, nitrous retards, individual timing controls and data aquisition.

I was BS'ing with Duane and Brian at Hi-Tech one day after they had gotten a Digital 7 in, and they figured that pretty shortly, they'd just have somebody drive from the shore, with the driver doing nothing except hitting the ignition key and steering.
