    Default Engine help

    So I am going to teach my self how to rebuild engines. I have always been in the market for a good starter block.

    I believe I have found one.

    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...Picture004.jpg

    I know its not much.

    The Casting number pulled from the block was;

    14101148- 87-90, 4 bolt, 1pc rear main seal.

    I am going to check it out tomorrow.

    Anything I should look for? Besides cracks.

    Would this make a good block?

    Looks good to me. I'd see if whoever is selling it will let you pull the pan, then you could see if there is any metal floating around or if any of the rods are blackened from a spun bearing. As for looking for cracks that's a bit difficult when it's assembled. Yes, rotate the crank a few times see if it binds or makes funny noises. Might even get lucky and it's setup for a hydraulic roller cam, not sure when Chevy started using those. Good engine to learn on, parts are cheap and easy to come by, and easy to work on.

    I dont know if it turns yet, I have yet to check it out. I am going tomorrow to check it out.

    He is asking less than $90. He says it was his roomamtes which he left behind. He aslo claims he doesnt know that much about it i had to tell him where the casting number was so he could get the number for me.

    At that price, if it turns and is a 4 bolt,, it should a bargain.

    Since you want to learn, it's probably a good idea to pull it apart yourself prior to assembling one with no knowledge.

    Depending on your application, I have a variety of sbc stuff sitting here, couple of cast cranks that are already turned for cheap, blocks too if that one does not work out.

    Offer him 50. If it doesn't pan out the antique auto swap meet is in a few weeks in Pomona, usually see a few good deals there, last one I went to a guy had a late model 350 out of a mercruiser, he wanted a couple hundred for it and it was dissasembled and clean.

    The thig is I want to dissambly it my self. I'm not looking for a just honed/bored deal or a running 350. I want one I have to take apart and inspect etc etc. At that price if it truns is a great deal. i dont care if it has a burnt valve or a broken crank, I am not looking to run the same parts.

    The best way to see how an engine works on the inside is to get dirty.

    At that price you should have already brought it home

    went to go check it out today turns fine, talked the guy down to 50 bucks. Cause i told him it didnt have any plugs. LOL

    The More interesting stuff;

    He didnt know what his room mate had or what it did, I grabbed a starter and some Oval port Big block heads complete minus rockers. Don't know what to do with them as I don't have a big block but you cant pass up free. There's also an edelbrock intake sitting over there for BBC looks like its polished. I have to go back tomorrow with my truck and a hoist if any one wants a BBC manifold let me know and ill pick it up for you. He also had some other starters sitting around make unknown.

    Head numbers are 14092360

    Those are peanut port heads, not desirable for performance usage, good for low rpm trucks.
