Mark IV BBC roller cam conversion options

    Default Mark IV BBC roller cam conversion options

    I'm contemplating switching to a roller cam and can find minimal info on the swap. What is needed to put one in a Mk IV 454? I found the comp cams retro thumper, but are there any other options? I'm not opposed to solid rollers either. Or should I just stay with a hydraulic flat tappet?

    I only need .540 lift 280 adv duration. It's on a Jet with headers if that helps.

    Here is what I used. Your results may vary.
    Cam: CCA-11-456-8 Hyd Roller .566/.566 Adv .296/.302 242/[email protected] Lobe Sep 112
    Roller Lifters: CCA-887-16
    Push Rods: CCA-7815-16
    Poly Dist Gear: CCA-12140
    I also made sure I used a cam walk button with a small roller bearing set at
    .007” end play with a lock plate as well. I also put in a timing chain that has a torrington thrust bearing. Timing cover is also aluminum.

    x2 contact chris straub here on the site and have him grind you a cam for your motor. off the shelf cams never perform as well as 1 built to your specs

    Thanks for all the good info. I may have phrased my question wrong, so let me ask this; are cams and lifters interchangeable between MK IV, Gen 5 and Gen 6? Comp cams list's theirs as a "retro fit" and I can't seem to find any interchange info except for SBC's.

    I'll get with Chris for a recomendation and availability for mey application.

    Mark 4, and Gen 5 used flat lifters from the factory. Gen 6 used rollers, held from rotating with a bolt in bracket in the lifter galley. Gen 6 cam is held in place with a retaining ring on the front and the cam has milling for that ring.

    For a Mark 4, as you have, you need the pieces that Chris told you to get. If you want reference, you can look at Summit or Jegs website, and it will say which generation the part is for, and what other pieces you need to go with it. For a Mark 4, you can use a Gen 6 cam, but you need the retaining ring, and a Gen 6 timing set etc.

    That makes more sense. I have heard that lifter bores are different, cam bearings are different sizes, oil holes in the wrong places, and all sorts of other rumors, but no solid info.

    So, if I understand correctly, any BBC roller cam and lifters will fit in my mkIV given that the appropriate timing, spacing, and retaining components are used?

    Factory Gen 6 lifters ONLY work on Gen 6 blocks because of the retainers. Any cam will fit the Mark 4. But best bet if you haven't already bought one is to buy a Mark 4 cam, and save the additional cost needed for the retaining ring and other "stuff" to make it work.

    Gen 6 cores have a stepped face on them as they use the cam retaining plate as mentioned. They also take a special timing set. If you have a Mark 4 block you will just need a std hyd roller core camshaft and a set of retro fit tie bar style lifters along with what else I have listed. Now hyd roller lifters are taller then solid roller or flat tappet lifters so you will need pushrods as they are shorter.

    I recommend getting a cast distributer gear also, (should be an option on the camshaft, especially on a custom grind) that way you dont need any special gears on the dizzy that wear out quickly...
