    Default Distributor Shims

    Are those plastic shims good for shimming the distributor housing?

    without a gasket my distributor has a .030 gap between housing and manifold, my gasket is .050 thick new.

    I havent checked gear mesh yet.

    .20 crush ? isn't clearence suppose to be aroud .005 i forget ?

    msd shows 10-30, but I know those gaskets crush over time. not sure how much

    IMO...if the dizzy doesnt sit flat on the manif without the gasket, u have a prob elsewhere!...check the gear mesh...check the pump rod length...it should sit flat ...just my .02 cents

    I have seen a few situations where between the deck of the block as well as the heads being cut that there was space like you have. I have seen guys measure the gap and stack an extra gasket or two in a pinch to give them the proper clearance.

    this is what I ordered.

    Distributor Housing Shim Kit
    Eliminates oil pump bind and spark scatter when using a distributor in an engine with resurfaced heads or deck. Fits 90° V6 and small and big block Chevy engines. Made from high-impact plastic to exact GM specs. Includes three shims: .030", .060", and .100".

    Don't forget that your depending on the intake manifold manufacturer to machine that area perfect, which would only be good till someone machines the head or block or uses different thickness head or intake gaskets.

    And not just width of the manifold, but the heigth of dizzy pad itself. If nobody ever needed the shims, nobody would make them

    Machine the housing and put a slip collor on it.

    Those shims are much smaller than the gasket to seal it to the manifold. Distributor shims are to keep the inner shaft from bouncing up and down causing wear and spark scatter. Extra gaskets on the intake manifold will keep you from loading the oil pump shaft and sending steel into the oil galleys.

    Needless to say both clearances need to be checked!

    Just for fun, I measured a crushed gasket, seems to have only lost about .004". I have a selection of distributor gaskets,, from about .043 - .068" thick, depending on who made them, would have been happy to have mailed you a couple

    Barry , I went out and measured a couple more that I have
    and I found a .060, Do you think I'll be safe just using a gasket?

    I'll install the dist. with the .060 and check the gear mesh and the oil pump shaft engagement.

    I was worried over time the gasket would crush and cause oil pump bind.
    thinking I would need the .030 shim to prevent this.

    Just trying to figure out how the experts did it.

    I've checked the clearance on the shaft/ gear when I replaced the gear.

    these shims are supposed to be for the dist housing to manifold, but maybe I wont need them anyway.

    on previous engines I always used double gaskets when needed.
    just want to be a little more careful with this engine

    If the gear mesh is correct there shouldn't be any issues with pump clearance. Those distances are fixed unless someone has machined the bottom of the pump, or the main cap excessively. Work to establish the correct gear alignment and shim the dist. (or adjust the collar) accordingly.
