    Default 496 mag

    So whats it take to convert a 496 MAG to a HO. Is there a qwik 50hp to be had here, or does it require some internal work?

    The cam and pcm are the only difference.

    Not really worth it.

    Exhaust should be your first step. Lightning, Dana, CMI, take your pick. You have to get the BAD stuff out before you introduce more GOOD stuff. There's 20-30hp right there (real world numbers).

    IF you are gonna tear the motor down enough to change the cam, you might as well go MORE than the stock HO cam. It's not much. RAYLAR's entry-level boat cam would be a much better choice. Roller rockers and better springs on the heads SHOULD be included in that swap. You're gonna pick up an honest 30-50hp AT LEAST. Heck, the rockers alone will free up 15-20hp over stock, just by getting rid of friction.

    WHIPPLE is the only place that has the PCM555 software for re-flashing the ECM. Their tune would be leaps and bounds better than the stock HO programming and you would stick with your own ECM instead of looking for another one from an HO. Expect another 10-15hp over HO programming.

    Other than that, run a good synthetic oil in the engine and an even better one in the drive - to free up some HP from within.

    So, from what Im taking from this; A Raylar cam (with springs and rockers), a whipple reprogam of the PCM, and good after market exhaust, and I should end up in the 460-480hp range starting from the 496 mag.

    480-500 at the crank should be no real problem. The dyno test of a stock HO with just good exhaust is 25hp, so that gets you to 450 at the crank. There is EASILY 30-50 more in the other parts. I always shoot for the LOW numbers, to be realistic. That way, if more hp is picked up, it's a bonus.
