    Default Rebuild time-opinions wanted

    Getting ready to start my winter project and just trying to get some direction on which way to go with this. Bought a 22 Daytona at the end of the summer and the motor went south. Wanted to rebuild it this winter anyways so no biggie. Motor was a stock Merc 300 hp 454. Not looking for anything huge on the new motor just want it to run pump gas and behave well around the docks. I believe the block is a 2 bolt main with cast crank 3/8 rods and peanut heads. My thoughts are that even if these parts are ok once it's broken down and inspected that I would be better off building on a stronger platform, 4 bolt/forged crank/7/16 rods and better heads. Any of these parts worth salvaging or should I just plan on replacing all of them? They worth anything or should I just throw them in the shit can? The way I see it the only parts worth salvaging are the seawater pump and oil pan but maybe I'm wrong. I have seen some short and long blocks for sale but the ones I have seen have had either 2 bolt mains or cast cranks and the motors I have built in the past that was a no no but then again those were putting out a lot more power. I would love to get some recommendations on cams from anyone that has experience with this hull or something similar. As I said before I'm not looking to go huge with the motor just want a big block with a good friendly cam and figure on putting a Dart manifold and a Holley on it and upgrading the distributor and ignition to MSD. Nothing fancy on heads just have them cleaned up and port matched as needed. I'm done rambling now. Thanks for any advice

    What year is the motor ?

    Does it have stock Merc exhaust ? Thru transom ? Any diverting exhaust ?

    What's your budget ?

    Just to put an early bug in your head, A crate 502 may end up being best bet when all is said and done.

    You might consider dropping the pan first, or possibly even just selling the engine as a complete Merc engine since most of the parts will not be suitable or used for your "performance" build.

    Cfm the boat is a 97 and the motor is supposed to be all original according to the previous owner. Although I can see the carb was replaced so in reality who knows what is in it lol. It has the stock Mercruiser logs and is thru transom with no diverters. Tips are under the water line so water reversion is something to consider on the cam although like I said I really don't want a radical set up just something that will run pump gas and pull friends on occasion but still be able to pull a nice hot lap on occasion. I know I will need to replace the exhaust and when funds permit I will be installing hydraulic steering. As far as budget goes I haven't set a number just going to try to keep in mind that I don't need a $35k motor like I had in the last boat lol. What's a 502 crate run for approx and what kind of power? They come with a performance cam or? If I get rid of this motor should I tear it down and sell it in parts or is it better to piece it out? In reality I would like to tear it down to see exactly what is in it just to be sure unless it made a huge difference in resale value.

    Looks like obnoxious1 gave me a pretty good answer to my last question even before I typed it Pulling the pan should show me everything I need to know then maybe I can off it for a couple hundred as a complete Merc and reduce the mess in the garage.

    damn Big Inch! 35K in the motor on the htm you shipped to ny? its one of the boats ive been looking at. a day late or should i say a few months late. should have been looking when you sold. how good of deal did your guy in ny get? lol can you give feedback on your 22 daytona. compare performance to htm. what are pros and cons. did u consider or test other hulls before going with eliminator? if u dont mind me asking what was ballpark price on the 22. how is boat market in ca. i am in mi.

    Yeah that motor was no slacker. Nor was anything else on the boat. I thought I priced it right but apparently could of gotten more. I put it up on a few boating sites and had a lot of interest but all involved some form of hiccup or another. I finally figured it was getting late in summer and that I would drop the price some and put it on boattrader and it sold within a couple of days. I had offers for considerably more then what I was asking but the buyer had put a lot of time and expense into the deal so I stayed with him. I had one guy local here that wanted to buy the boat just for the motor/drive/steering combo. He was looking to upgrade his current boat and from what I recall he said Teague wanted like 75-80k for a similar package. So how good of a deal did he get? I would say an amazing deal but I was willing to part with it for that price and on the plus side I don't have to worry about it rolling by at the lake/river and risk being seen crying in public .

    As far as comparing them well they are completely different animals. As a boat well the HTM is bigger inside and out and has a really nice cuddy. Mine with the stand off box would just eat the big water up. Didn't have to worry about anyone spilling their drinks at 100+. The Daytona gets up and out of the water really fast even with the dog of a motor that was in it and should hold it's own in medium chop. I was surprised at how solid the Daytona felt and sounded. As far as testing other boats. No I didn't. I have been around boats long enough to know what I wanted. My choices were 1 the 22 Daytona/DCB then 2 the 23 Cougar MTR and then a Cole skier or something equivalent. At the time I needed to get into a smaller boat but in reality their have been many times that I thought if I ever get another boat it would be a 22 Daytona so when I found this one and was able to work a deal I went with it.

    thanks for the feedback. as i mentioned before i have a little time yet before season rolls around for us here in michigan. hope u dont mind the questions signed up couple months ago on friend recommendation trying to gain more info and edjamucate myself. lol 5:04PM here what do you all do that allows u time to chat at 2pm i want ur job matter of fact at 80 degrees in jan id be on my boat out there in ca. unfortunately i mostly work nights gotta run soon.

    Well little bit of good news. Looked up the block numbers and it's actually a 4 bolt. Anyone know of a site that will give the details of the rest of the components by the mercruiser serial numbers?
