Default MSD Digital 7 or stick with the Mag

What makes more power an MSD with a digital 7 or a mag setup. I am currently running the mag but was offered to try out the MSD digital 7.
What are the pros and cons? Has anyone ever dynod the two?
    Thanks.

On a gas carburated deal i would use the the digital 7. im going to try a digital 7 for the first time on a blown injected alky deal in a few days but,i am leary of it cause im afraid that when it hits the limiter it will blow the flame out and likely not relight untill after its shut off and has a chance to dry out. I would imagine that on a deal like your it will be a valve spring saver for sure.

You should get a lot of opinions on this one. A few years back we dynoed a MSD 7 against a Vertex standard mag. In a 850 HP BBC, didn't make squat for difference...
We used MSD's in our race car. The MSD gives you lot's of options in terms of timing curves, start retard, rev limiters and is generally easier to use on board data acquistion (if that's a consideration). Certainly that's a large part why MSD's are in every NHRA Pro Stock engine.
We just got off the dyno with our new engine and wanted to test our mag against the dyno shop's MSD. Unfortunately, the mag caused to much interferance to get decent readings. The dyno guy's opinion is the same as what we found out in our earlier testing, very little difference in HP between the two for an application like ours. We had the choice, will start the year with a mag for its simplicity.

digital 7 has all kinds of cool features including data aq. and individual cylinder timing but if you arent good on a lap top there is no reason to get a digital 7.msd software is a pain in the ass.

IMO you won't get any worthwhile difference.

If the extrta "cool" abilities of the MSD box are OF USE to you, then get it and use them. Looking for MORE POWER from an ignitiobn change, to get any, the old one needs to be malfunctioning somehow.

My drag hydro has a 604 BBC w/ 1471 supercharger and alcohol inj. I bought a MSD 10 box and coil and it works great. 1500hp/1500lb.ft. on dyno. Crank trigger set up.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The Mag has worked flawless and for what I am using it for it seems just perfect. I was offered the use of the MSD setup to see if there would be any changes or advantages other than the variable timing adjustmenst and just concentrated on the power diff between the two types of ignitions. From what you guys have told me I'm not even going to bother.
    I'll stick with the magnet..........................
And Chris, I don't even know how to open a laptop let alone program one with software and all that stuff...

In my experince MSD keeps the spark plugs cleaner and is easier to start. But I have ran the fastest with a mag. Not saying that had anything to do with it though. Great question would like to hear more.

I'm with Lowrider. If you can use all of the advanced functionality of the Digital 7, then go with it. But, don't go with it just because you think it'll make more power by wiring it up. By the way, you never mentioned what kind of mag you're running.

I seen an article in Hot Rod years ago that compaired all the MSD boxes. These were before the digitals. They all were within a couple of HP, with the 6AL making the most.
