    Default Block Honing (Re-Honing)

    Merlin block re-build

Cylinder walls appear to be in good condition with just some light surface rust maybe. Planning on using Hell Fire rings, and here is what speed pro sent me.

    Rehoning Use Aluminium Oxide stones
    280 grit, 2/3 strokes
    400 grit, 2/3 strokes

(This was with the fancy Sunnen hone tools of which I probably won't be buying)

Can I hand Hone it with a ball hone or is it worth taking to a shop? Do I really need both the 280 & 400 grits? My 4.5" Ball hone has some flat spots on the ends of the balls from lots of use...probably ought to be getting a new one anyway???

I believe honing is done with a stone. The ball gadget is a glaze breaker, not a hone.

The Merlin block was finished honed about 4 or 5 months ago for "Moly" rings. Is the cylinder wall finish different for moly rings vs. the Hell Fire rings?

I am not familair with the Hellfire ring....have not honed for them. It appears by what you said....a 400 finish...they are a hard ring...which I would expect them to be.
It varies but generally a moly ring is honed with a 625 stone as a finish. I have heard some guys do a 525 finish and get away with. Some guys Plateu hone and finish with a few strokes of an 800 stone.
Regardless....it's a job for a Sunnen....not a hand held hone (excluding the very few old timers who know how to hold it)....and certainly not a ball hone.
Course that is just my opinion.

I've had this block for a couple of years and decided to build an engine. I hated it but I bit the bullet and had it machined.

I would bring it to a shop. I tried doing mine and screw it up. Ended up bring it to a shop, they charged me $60.00 to do it.

Do not use hell fire rings!! i had them in my last motors 1050 hp with 10psi... and at 100 hours the cylinders were chromed and had a ton of blowby because the rings are so hard...asked Keith eickert and he said those rings cost him a couple rebuilds a few years back because the same thing that happened to me...unless your using a ton of boost or a ton of NOS don't do it.. good luck

they are tool steel, and are primarily used for pro mod type insane nos loads, nitro, etc., I would never consider them a long use ring.
