Default MSD 7 series vs 6 series

    What's the difference, beside $300?

The new boat has a 7AL box w/ a crank trigger setup. I haven't pulled the distributor out yet, but I'm pretty certain that since the cap still round, the cam still turns it. What good does the crank trigger do when the dist. is still mechanically driven by the cam? What is the advantage of the 7 series setup over the 6 series? I'm dumb when it comes to anything more than a 6 series box and conventional type distributor...and probably dumb when it comes to much more than that, but lets start with this for now.

The dizzy is still there to distribute the spark energy to each plug. The rotor/cap arrangement has never been considered a big issuse with timing accuracy. Its was the points and condenser first, but even after the got rid of those, the oil pump chatter, and cam deflection caused timing fluctuations.; The cam, from the point where it is tied to the crank by the T chain or gears, to the back of the cam where it drives the dizzy, flexes. Big time. So the dizzy is trying to determine where the crank is actually at, but it is twisted from the dizzy to the t chain. Firing off the crank position is much more accurate. The dizzy now just point the spark energy in the right direction. The rotor doesn't have to be in perfect alignment to get the energy to go down the correct wire.

The MSD 7 just produces higher energy (not voltage)than the MSD 6. But if your motor doesn't need the extra engery, boosted, NOS, super hi compression ratio, and high RPM, there is no gain from the 7.

What RPM do consider high RPM?
