    Default Main Cap Billet Strap?

I purchased a strap kit for my 455 Olds -caps #2,3 and 4.

I was advised by the supplier that I need to shave 0.500" (12.7mm) of the caps to fit them under the oil pan.

After checking the caps and straps I found that I only needed to machine 0.196" (5mm) of to fit the straps and studs to clear the pan.

Do I need to take off 0.500" or must I try and keep as much of the original material on the cap.

I also need to modify the oil pump shield to fit. Is this item crucial?(see pic of shield)

    Thanks in advance.

    Sounds like their "blanket" instructions.

If it were mine I would only take off as much as I need. Relieve the shield however necessary.

As long as fit and function are maintained it probably does not matter how much actual material is removed..

Make sure the line hone is performed with all of that installed. And it should have as much flat contact area as possible. Be sure the recommended amount removed is not just for pan clearance but to get flat contact area as well.
