    Default quick starter diag. question

well, pretty much, you can turn the key 15 times, it'll click, click, click,....until it cranks. You can hit it on the side and it has no effect. I thought it was just brushes, so I pulled it apart, and the brushes are fine, in fact, everything looks fine. Is it my armature having a bad spot? So I just need to put a starter in it?

    thanks guys.

    Default clarification please

    Sir Addict,

What kind of starter is it? A Delco by chance? A pic would save lots of time. IF a Delco there is a simple (but old style) trick that often works by design...

    Regards,
    IG

    Usually connections or solenoid.

yeah, i took the wire to the starter off and it had rust on both sides, so i cleaned them off and i'm crossing my fingers!

Its a newer starter, an off-brand mini starter.

Has this starter been use before on this engine or is this a new install? I was under the impression that this is something that just started happening, and I think everyone else does too.

It came on the engine, I assume it worked just fine before, and just recently started doing it, hence another reason it was probalby just the connection on my boat.

If it turns out that it still does this, some of the no name mini starters are natorious for having weak ass solenoids. Also, the angle/bevel on the gear may be cut wrong and not allowing it to engage. But the biggest reason for this, is the starter needs to be shimmed to the right height and flywheel engagement.

assuming the starter motor isn't drawing a large amount, check the available voltage to the solenoid with the key held in the crank position, with a digital volt meter ,by time the 12v goes all the way to the key from the a$$ end of the boat and back its around 8+ or- (assuming it doesn't have a "helper solenoid"from Napa or Oriellys ) all these starters like a good strong voltage shot to work properly (specially when they get hot) btw a helper solenoid (relay) runs 12v directly from the Battery a foot or so away right to the desination (Helpers work with less voltage ) Call if you need help Tom
I'll look for a pic for you
