    Default 460 heads

    I want to prep some c9ve heads .can I completely remove the egr lumps out of the exhaust ports with no worries? there not drilled at all. I'm not a head guy, I thought i would remove these,give them a polish before i sent them in for valves ,guides. thanks

    Yes you can remove them. Do not try to make the port top level. After you remove the bump and shape the port it still needs to be a little higher on the side where the bump was and slope down to the other side. You can also remove a 1/4 inch or so of the guide boss and angle it into the port.

    With the cylinder head in the upright position and you looking back into the exhaust port (toward the back of the valve), the smog bump will favor the right-hand side of the roof. You may grind the bump down until it is gone, but going higher than that risks hitting water (or at least in the case of a jet boat it can make the port's roof so thin in that specific area that it will crack from high rpm heat versus cold lake water). Do not grind higher into the roof than the cutting out the smog bump.

    Once the bump is gone, the left-hand side of the roof will still be higher than the right-hand side (where the smog bump was). This is acceptable since the exhaust flow favors that side of the port as it exits the cylinder.

    p.s.: Although it is a gargantuan physical obstruction, the smog bump is not where the greatest flow gains are made in the 460 passenger car port (although removing the obstruction does help). Believe it or not, greater gains may be had by leaving the smog bump alone and instead working other areas of the port. If you are going to remove the bump, also spend a lot of time around the seat and short turn radius.
