    Default Cam timing?

Been having trouble getting twin turbo BBC to run right. Seems to be severely retarded. With #1 at TDC shouldn't the dot on the cam gear be at 6 o'clock and not at 12 o'clock? Seemed to like 60/70 degrees advance when it did run. Would run at 30* locked out but not well.

install with it at 6 o'clock position. Does it have multiple key ways on crank?

Yes Bob, I agree but I didn't put this together, I paid someone who does that for a living.

One keyway. Gonna try to fix it without disassembling the whole valvetrain.

#1 is going to be TDC with the cam in the 12 oclock and the 6 oclock position.
Only one of those is going to be on the compression stroke though.

It should be easy to roll the engine over and when the #1 intake valve closes your coming up on the compression stroke.

Is this the engine with the BS3 and COP ?

Why not just pull the rocker arm off the #1 intake set up a dial indicator and put the degree wheel on it and see where it's really at? You can make a piston stop out of an old sparkplug so you can find true TDC.

If the cam gear mark is at 12 o'clock, spin the crank around again. Cam turns once for every 2 crank revolutions....

The marks on the gears will get you somewhat close, but no where near accurate. Get a degree wheel on it.

Thats what I would do. I would drop the pan or pull the t cover until I at least did this.

I was waiting for this. There is zero difference between the mark at 12:00 and at 6:00.

Can't he just split the overlap and see where the ignition timing mark on the balancer is in relation to TDC???........Isn't 12 o'clock TDC during #1 overlap??......

Sure. See Moneypits post above. Any "properly" installed cam will have the cam gear timing mark when #1 is back at top dead center. So if you were to turn the crank till the mark was at 12:00, it only menas you need to turn the crank 360 again, and it will be at 6:00. Any motor with the marks @ 6:00, with #1 @ TDC, will also have the mark @ 12:00 and #1 @ TDC. Its all the same.

If the cam is a split over lap cam, this would be the quick and dirty way.
