Default 455 Olds OEM Cast Piston clearance?

I am having machine work done on my standby 455 Olds engine and would appreciate it if somebody could help me with the OEM cast piston to sleeve clearance.

I will be installing Totalseal 2nd gapless rings.

    Thank you,

On a bore that size I run 2 1/2 Thousandths or .0025 in a boat that will run till the crank falls out.

First, dump the cast pistons. Second, run .004-.0055 skirt to wall on the new FORGED pistons...... Just my .02..........Ray

    Hi Ray,

I am running .0050 on my high HP motor with Icon 14.4cc Forged pistons. The OEM pistons is Std and the engine will only be used in emergencies to keep me on the water if something goes wrong with the High HP motor.

I have to import all my stuff and it will give me time to get spares if something goes wrong.

I have a set of .30 and .60 forged pistons, but will keep them for future use.

.005 w/forged .0025-.003 w/cast should be fine and mondello marine head gaskets...I don't know if any other BBO head gaskets are the same as mondello, but the mondellos have considerably smaller coolant passages. Olds motors in a marine application have a problem with water circulation causing the 4 center cylinders to run much cooler than the rest.

I have a 455 shortblock i tore down that had 'marine' head gasets from local auto parts store and the coolant passages were considerably larger
and i had to use a drilled t-stat just to get it to build some kind of temp. and it still had the skirts on the 4 center slugs trashed on both sideds, while the 4 outer slugs were ok.

And since i built the olds motor with the mondellos i got a job in a boat shop and have not seen any BBC head gaskets with the amount of restriction the mondellos do.

No need for t-stat either...motor will run within 10 degrees of 160 all day long.

Good luck on that hot rod olds motor! And havin a backup is good idea, especialy where you live... It's just gota suck havin to import everything. Bad enough i order a set of head gaskets and have to WAIT 3 days for them to get here.
