Default World Record Rocket Bike 1/4 Mile

I would love to build a rocket machine of any type.

    Build one yes.
    Drive it NO

    Those guys don't live long.

I knew a guy 30 years ago named Rod Phelps, AKA Rocket Rod. Lived in the next town over from me.

He had 2 rocket car's. One on the east coast and one on the west.
He had some pretty cool stories to tell.

Going from memory from 30 years ago......

    According to Rod Phelps,

He had a chart showing the acceleration down the 1/4 mile.

First you have to understand, once lit, there's no shutting it down until the fuel is gone and he really didn't steer the thing. His crew looked down a tube on top of the body like a scope on a rifle and lined him up so he ended up between the light's at the end.

At the first 1/2 second he was going 60 MPH. Rod said that he braced himself as hard as he could but it was like being hit by a Greyhound bus at a stop light.

    First second was 100 MPH.
Pretty much each second after that he gained 100 MPH per second.
400 MPH car???? I can't remember but, NHRA had a speed limit imposed and Rod was knocking on the door a few times and NHRA came down on him pretty hard to keep it under the limit. problem was, the crowd wanted a show and once lit, it wasn't like he could back off to slow the car down. Even though it was a rocket car, it wasn't exactly rocket science LOL.

The fuel tanks held 2,000 PSI and he only was putting in 500 PSI +/- and he was seeing stars as he went down the track from the G forces. The potential was there to accelerate so hard the blood in major veins and arteries would rupture from the weight of the blood. Think about a water balloon being twirled in a circle and bursting from the G forces.

I think at the time there was 12/14 people in the world licensed to drive a rocket car by the NHRA and 8 or so had already been killed. Rod is still alive and I saw him at the beginning of this summer.

His rocket funny car is in the Garlit's museum in Fla.

I remember seeing a couple hydrogen peroxide cars run back in the 1970's
They were deafening loud and one blew a chunk of the track off behind it.

Yeah I seen one at Firebird around 1984, it had a rocket like the lunar module
and the smoke would bleach anything it came in contact with.
