Default upgrades for the merc 454 mag 365 hp

    whats up everybody

Just wanted to get some suggestions for cam, springs and valves. Motor is stock accept for I added the 454 mag fuel injection, I will do a three angle valve job, bronze guides and pocket work to the stock heads.

I will also be using imco power flo exhaust to help it breath I hope to get 40 to 50 hp from the exhaust. I also would like to get some where between 75 to 100 hp from the cam and head work.

I want it to be dependable and be easy on the drive as well. Already have the s turn downs for the exhaust, any suggestions would be very helpful.

We will mainly use it for crusing 50-55 and want the rpm at 3500 to 3800 for that speed, recreational skiing and little ones tubing.

This motor is in a 1993 26' cole cuddy open bow bravo one grive 1.50 gears with a current 22 4 blade. On the wide open side I would like to see 75 but in reality because of the boats design, a 1992 is not a stepped hull. I am hoping an honest 70 mph. I am a ford guy so I dont know much about the 454 other than the 365 came with a carb and flat tappet cam. As for the 454 385 hp it came with a hydraulic roller and fuel injection. So a little help please

    Thanks

    mark

I am probably a little out of line here because I am a jet boat guy but..
If you have a 365 now and do get the 100HP of you goal, this will not be enough to push a 26' into the 70's

465 HP is preaty easy to get , but I would think that you will be reaching the limits of the base build. I think the 365HP has a cast crank, 2 bolt block with light duty 3/8" rod bolts

    Good luck

When you change the camshaft, you will have to re-program the ECU. It will not support a cam other than the one installed in the 454 Mag the same year as the EFI you installed.

Thank you sir that is what I needed to know real cold hard facts not well I think or i guess. Thank you again for your time to type all this information on the 365 mag motor. The 2nd cam you are refering to, have you had any experience with it. Meaning if I go with that cam and matched vavle trian parts will it get me to where I want to be as far as hp and dependability? Did you ever get a chance to dyno one of these cams in motor like I have 365 with converted F/I and the ecu has been reprogrammed currently for 89 octain with the aftermarket air filter. On the ecu it was bumped to 34 degrees timing and fuel was leaned out a bit more not sure of the fuel ratio did not get that info. I also know that the ecu unit will have to be programmed if I use the 2nd can that you referenced in your reply. Thanks again for your input. Last boat I had had the 496 mag changed the prop and it was a done deal 236 genesis with 375 hp ran 70mph on gps no steps and weighed in at 3300 lbs

Not trying to be an ass but I already knew that. What I wanted was a recomendation on a cam, spring and lifter kit. Please reread my post, if you have anything to add that can help me attain the information I am requesting please reply to the thread

    Thanks

Your right, that was totally useless information.

I did read your post. It really wasn't that complicated. Being in the business, I see customers all the time changing cams, etc. and not understanding the ECU can not adjust for those changes by itself, wondering why the engine wont run. You didn't mention you were aware of that. It is probably the single most important piece of information you need to know and taking for granted you knew that would be a mistake.

    Good luck

    Dude What?

Still no info from you on a cam choice, Seeing your avatar tells me either you have a shop and cant read. Or you choose to be an azz and cause drama on a simple question. For a person of your stature (WHO IS IN THE BIZ) that toots his own horn in other peoples threads to promote your biz,
in two post you never answered the question I asked.

I never asked that question regrding the ECU, becausae as I said I already knew that it needs to be recalibrated for any changes made on a ECU controlled motor. Again your suggestion on Cam, springs and lifters. You know what never mind you are just wasting my time good luck to you and keeping your biz open

Helpful statement! did you read anywhere in my post about me wanting to know about the ecu. Thats right you did not so save it jack AZZ. What a bunch of doof balls, I thought I could come on here ask a simple question for the Dyno boards and all I get is a bunch of BS because I domt have HLB marine behind my name. I can go get this kind of help from cranes comp cams or any other cam manufacutres tech line. what a bunch of lame azzes I can see I will not be useing this area of the site anymore. I am done with this thread. Funny NOT ONE OF YOU ANSWERED MY QUESTION. Which was recomendations for cam ,springs and lifters. Only one guy on this post gave me helpful information the rest of you are a bunch of drama queens. Thats why they have to have the meadeaters on here because of the stupid replys that people make because they either want to be funny or they really dont know. But I will cus you out if you bad mouth my friend type of crap. Thats not what this area is about, it is about people that have the same things in common helping one another out. I guess you and the others don't get that if you did you would not post such ignorant replies. Hopefully someday you may need some info and you will get the same in return
