I'm no expert, but it comes down to how thick and what materials you need to cut I believe. At my last shop, ours would cut up to 1-1/4" steel. We sold it on CL for like $500 used. Might be a place to start.
They have come very far in the last couple years. I have a big miller. I have not run into anything it won't cut yet. Big machine. Now the same machine is the size of a big lunch box. I'd look for an older used piece. Give it a test run. Buy.
I did not know when using a drag tip your amperage is about cut in half. So, beware of that, or be ready to use a standard tip. They also need DRY air. Other than that.. buy one that you can get support for if you need it.
Check with Eastwood they have a home use unit for less than $700.They seem to stand behind their products very well and their tech people have some knowledge.Dont forget you need to have a good supply of VERY dry air.
Check here for welding/ cutting equipment. I have mail ordered from them and they have been great. It was anything over 50.00 was free shipping. My plasma is a Miller. Fresno Oxygen / Barnes Welding Supply
Here is the newer model of mine and it is a jewell.
