Question So, How Bad Did I Mess UP????

Traditionally like etched in stone... when I un-winterize from prior winter hibernation (all valves backed off)..'before' I start adjusting the valves I'll pre lube the engine with the drop-in tool and a drill as I rotate the crank several times by hand.

HOWEVER...this time I got lazy...I just went ahead and rotated the crank to adjust the valves, heel/toe method starting with 1-7 then the other side 2-8 without any prior pre oiling...spark plugs were out. Then fired the engine.
Morel roller hyd units...but, I'm now worried (if) I may have hurt the actual cam bearings.
Engine sat for 6 months and was put bed last November with fresh Valvoline VR1 20/50 Racing Synthetic run in it for a few moments.
Am I over worrying the situation?

Seen expecting fathers in the waiting room that worried less. Lube it, and go play

He is a wrorysome one. I fear we may have ruined his life with some of the stuff we hit him with back when he trashed his last motor.

It's probably a total loss. You should just yank it out and ship it to me.

Not my fault, well...I should have checked the head work/spring pressure myself.
Builder had waaaaaaay too much spring seat pressure for the baby flat-tappet cam that was in the engine = killed a lobe in 20 minutes.

Thanks for the feedback...I wouldn't be worrying (if) I used that case of 50wt Brad Penn oil >but, GN7 said the 20/50 Valvoline synthetic VR1 was the chit to use....being he was proven wrong about the super low zinc levels he thought it had

Whoa, never said that the VR1 syn had was bad. And the VR1 Conventional could have gotten the beat down if by now if not saved along with every other 20/50 on the market. Never fear. It could still happen. The EPA never sleeps. You know that.

Why did they need a "not street legal" conventional oil. But they don't now? Think about it. First it was here, now its gone. MMMM

Allow me to clear the air here so I don't get beat up anymore than I already have. (I know how you feel PS&B) Read this. You really owe to yourself to read the WHOLE thing if think you deisel oil is so safe, and will continue to be.
All this could change with the next go round with the auto manufactures and the EPA, who are really in the drivers seat, not the oil companies.

    LINK: ZDDP laws explained

Kendall has a similar deal somewhere on their website, but not as well written. And too hard to locate. the interesting thing about the weights involved is, it explains things like why Valvoline chose to list their 10/30 as a SL but their 20/50 and straight weights are SM. BECAUSE THEY CAN! To keep the levels up on their 10/30, they had not choice but to keep it as a SL oil. Sneeky bastards, and really, there is very little difference between to the 2 levels except the additive package allowed in them. Some small changes in vaporization levels, and other nonsense we don't care about.

What we really need is someone to define "high", as in high zink. Because that is the new deal. Define "up" or "fast". High zink now means the highest allowable. But you need to know what is allowable. In the high multi weights and straight wts, today, thats pretty. Highest allowable in a SL 10/30 is pretty good. In a SM, its in the toilet. Think I can find a SM that claims "high zink" in a Pep Boys?" The BS is confusing, and it continues. You just have to be carefull.

Lets hope that they powers that be don't get crazy again anytime soon and we can all get use to useing what we are comfortable with, without worrying that some econo nuts decide to stir the pot again. Don't count on it. I remember when we all thought we would always be able to buy gas for a L88, or 427 side oiler. What a laugh that turned out to be. Now, in the state of Calif. you have to sign under perjury that you will not use race fuel anywhere except in a santiioned racing event. No river playing(legally) with race fuel anymore!

Who do you think will find out first when the oil changes? I'm pretty sure the CAM company's will know first way way before it actually happens, I'm sure I'll be in the loop. So how about we put this to rest right NOW. I'll tell ya when it happens ALRIGHT? lol Now let ME start by telling you that you only need so much, Too much is just insurance when it comes to zinc, The Lucas break in oil has like 3300 ppm or someshit Valvoline is 1300ppm guess what Bob? You ONLY need like 800ppm for a flat tappet to survive. There will always be some company with High zinc Always. You know why??? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$ The shit will be pricey count on it.But we will have it. If it's not here we will smuggle it in. Because that's how we roll.

Actually, the cam companies were caugh off gaurd the last time, and when they did find out when it happened, they all but panic and threw every body under the bus. Even some that shouldn't. But, in their defense, they were given some bad, or yet to happen info on some oils. Things that "were" scheduled to happen and never did, and some that were recended. No matter. I trust nobody. That means no body, even cam grinders, including all cam grinders. Maybe some are a little more privy to oil info than others. But truthfully, I don't trust the oil companies to release info that is harmfull to sales.

I will ask again, why did Valvoline feel there was a need for a 20/50 "not street legal" oil if the "current" laws have no limit on ZDDP on 20/50 or straight weight, and is no longer available. Or, stated another way, NO LONGER NEEDED.
There was no warning the last time, and a whole shit load of cams were trashed, and I really don't care to count on you to warn me next time.
