    Default possible to get a later model "small cap" HEI to work?

    My dizzy just took a dump, and not only am I in a hurry, but also broke at the moment.

    I have a "Small Cap" HEI distributor with the external coil out of an 87 TPI...

    Now, The only issue with this is there's no advance on it. Can I just lock my timing and use this until I can get something else?

    Any issues I'd have if I do use this, and lock timing?

    EDIT: Oh yeah, its a jet boat with a 496 Stroker...I'd just use an HEI but I have a tunnel ram.

    the only thing inside is the pickup- the module is external also- it would work, but I wouldn't do it....what went wrong with your other distributor?

    At least with the HEI, you can put in a curve kit and quicken it up. Use the lightest springs with the weights that comes with kit.

    OHH, with the kit, you don't need the vac. adv. with the lightest spings.

    The module in the dizzy just went bad....

    I've read up on those comp 9000's or whatever they're called...mallory's old breakerless distributors; and thats what they do. Those modules were pretty fragile. It started yesterday, and today...nothin. Coil is good, power to coil, etc etc etc, its the distributor.

    getrdone: there are no weights or springs in this style, this was used with the ECM to adjust the timing, so I'd have to just lock her down.

    one of the statements we hear from customers when they call us about testing/replacing their unilite® module is that they have read on various web forums that the unilite® is an unreliable pos. We can tell you that the people posting those comments should probably not be working on their vehicles unsupervised. These people are blaming the affect (a blown or damaged module) instead of what actually caused the module to fail.
    i regularly use the following analogy when speaking to our customers about module reliability: if you were to purchase four brand new tires and then knowingly drive through a pile of steel and all the tires go flat, would you blame the tires as being junk? The reply that is given 100% of the time is "of course not!". The driver was obviously an idiot. So, why do people find it so easy to blame an ignition module? The easy answer is lack of understanding of the product. It is easy to blame something that you know nothing about.
    the modules cannot really kill themselves, so you have to try to find out what caused the failure. We have customers that have used the same module for 20+ years and others that have killed three on a saturday afternoon. The guy that killed three purchased two rebuilt alternators from a typical chain store and both had cheap (cost savings), sticking diodes in them, causing a voltage dump to ground. I endured considerable screaming, cussing, and insults, yet i finally got him to agree to take the alternator(s) to a local rebuilder on monday for testing. note: The basic bench testers in the parts stores cannot test for sticking diodes or a voltage dump. A fast oscilloscope is required. He found out after the units were tested that they were sending a 140+ amp spike to ground every time he turned off the key. This explained why the engine would start once with the new module, but never again. Replacing the diode in the "new" alternator solved the problem.

    Bet you never had a unilite fail due to under the hood heat have you.

    When they first came out they would fail just from the heat coming up thru the dizzy body. Mallory's solution then was to mount the module on silicone to help block the heat. After 3, I just gave up. Fords front mounted dizzy was death to them. Specially a big engine in a small engine compartment. Like a FE powered early Mustang. Heat off the radiator would just toast them. Sure hope they have improved.

    Ya but......
    Throw in any other kind of dizzy you want and it won't fail.. So like uni-nolight make a really good alternator test tool if your alternator has an issue that you would otherwise never notice.

    And i can say for sure i have never had an alternator dump and HEI module and if it did, it wouldn't have cost $80 to replace....and after i waited a week to get it.

    If you are limited on space, but want a true HEI - there is this problem solver. It's their "tri-power HEI", since 3-2 manifolds usually take up a bunch of distributor space.

    Performance Distributors now offers a small diameter high performance electronic
    ignition system for Chevrolet engines that do not have the clearance for a D.U.I.
    Due to the large size of the DUI, it will not fit applications utilizing a blower, tunnel

    20 YRS AND COUNTING So 1990ish I think I remember posting when they FIRST came out. Try like more than 30 yrs ago. I guess maybe they should have put a warning on the box, "NOT SUITABLE FOR FORD JUNK" They didn't, and lost a life long customer that was 100% Mallory then. I don't think I was alone either. I think the sales support that.
    They were on top for years, let their customers down big time, probably as a result of being sold to Joe Hrudka, who could screw up a wet dream by doing nothing more than waking up.
    Amazing how fast he was able to almost destroy Mallory and Accel which were both very popular, Erson cams, another perfered choice at the time, Hays, one of the largest sellers in clutches. Now Prestolite has them, and they are so far in the toilet, they can only manage to keep the doors open with shear cash.

    Such a pity. All top companies. And all he had to do was be square with the cash paying customers that built the companies to start with.
    MSD seems to be going the same way. Fall behind in technology, and crappy customer service will kill a company every time. Who knows, it could happen to them if they forget the customer and concentrate chasing the almighty dollar.

    Hope all this cash grapping doesn't lead us to all run Chinese made ignitions. Or are we already

    GN'z right- back in the days of "SuperShops" mallory was king I had a friend who was
    a manager of one of the stores in Pomona, where every visit got me the 50 dollar deal
    on anything in the store. all my friends therefore ran Mallory dist.,Erson cams, etc..
    was told to run the active power filter on them-never had a problem. just never wanted
    one in a boat-would rather use their magnetic breakerless module- you can still get the
    conversion for yours to do this, and not have to worry about the "supermarket door buzzer"
    module failing on the water their new stuff is also just as nice as the Msd stuff,
    prob. better- but not sure, I have boxes of 6al's, so that's what I'm gonna use till they
    crap- BUT MY NEXT ONE WILL BE "ICE" for sure
