I was out on the lake yesterday in some pretty chopped up water, I hit a wave and launched the boat, when the boat settled the engine died and I had to get towed in. I found out this morning the the dizzy gear had eaten up 4 teeth on the cast gear on my MSD. This engine has about 100 hours on it and have never had any problems with it. I took a mirrior and a flashlight down the opening to look at the cam gear and it appears to be ok, I spun the engine over and checked it 360 degrees. LUCKY I GUESS I had this happen to me a long time ago on another boat and it ate up the cam gear as well. The cam in the engine is a hyd. roller and it appears to have a a cast gear on it. I was always told to run a bronze gear on a billett cam and a cast gear on a cast cam.Im looking for some opinions on what gear I should by to replace the broken one with. I see there is a polimer gear now and is about $110. I dont care how much it cost but I dont want to break another gear. Im hoping to get the engine to last the rest of the season with the metal that is now gone threw it and do a tear down this winter to repair the damage the broken gear has caused to the oiling system.
