    Default Wipple Charging 496HO

Alright, I think I did some HW and couldn't find a thread on this, but my bad if I am wrong.

Looking to do something pretty quickly with my new boat, I need more power before the season starts and have some extra $$ to throw at it right now.

I have a DCB F-26 with a 496HO and a Bravo XR (non-sportmaster lower) and the 70ish (on a good day) just isn't cutting it for me. I have done a little research and would love to just install an entire new motor but that will not happen at the moment. I am curious as to whether anyone has experience in installing the wipple on this particular motor and if so thoughts on it. I have read up about it and according to wipple the motor will run approximately 650HP with a 5lb pully. Assuming that is correct what are the thoughts on running that setup with the XR drive?

I am not looking to have to do any work/replacement on the drive. If that was the case I would look into ditching the whole setup and starting fresh, but that is a little out of the pricerange right now.

Well you left yourself pritty open on this one but I'll start. First I'm one of the few that have done this to a STOCK 496 ho for 3+ years and 100+ hours and got away with it. You really need to know what the motor can handle. It can be done. But you have to know that it is and can be a ticking time boom! I have had a ton of fun with mine and never ran the piss out of it and keep the motor happy and cool. There is alot more than just bolting it on and going. I belive that Whipple and Dustin has the best product out there for the 496. I ran a stock xr behind mine aswell. Some people can make things last and others can blow shit up faster than you can bolt things on. PM me if you want to get into it some more and I will help you with the little I know. There are a handfull of people on the boards that have had the same success as me and tons that have had bad ones. Wait let me get my popcorn!

Yah, I had a feeling I would open up a shooting gallery on this one, but I am at a huge loss of what I want to do. I have priced out several different motor swap options from Teague and Boostpower but from what i can read any of those options are going to need a big drive upgrade which is something I just don't have the funds for at the moment which is kind of making me lean towards just keeping the 496 stock until I am ready to ditch it and the drive when I can afford the new setup. But then there is the other side of me saying F it and to get the whipple kit, and a few other toys and have them all installed for me and having approx 600HP might keep me happy for a while. Coming from my old 22' I know all to well how much $$ it is to rebuild drives, on the plus side, this thing only has one. I am not looking to hotrod around all day long, just looking for that little bit extra when I want it which makes me think I stand a pretty good chance at holding things together. Famous last words right? I don't know I am torn for sure, but it just seems like my best option at the moment.

Get the WHIPPLE kit and set it up conservative and you will be ok. When we usually install those types of upgrades, we remove the engine and pull the heads. We then install inconel exhaust valves, severe duty intakes, new cam and valve spring, our exclusive MLS head gasket part number and of course the charger. We do a few fuel system modification and our own tuning.

With this said of course it is out of most peoples budgets. I can say that if it is set up conservative, it should be fine.
We try to overkill and protect the reliability of any upgrade so we can avoid the weekend breakdown call.

The kit from WHIPPLE that we sell is great, we just happen to offer it our upgraded way.

It sure wakes them up. Enjoy

Boostpower said it all! Whipple is the best out there. the key here is the SETUP!. Dustin does a really good job on the ecm. I had to swap my plugs every year because I would get a little stumble at a low rpm. My plugs would just get dirty from the rich tune. Ok buy me, change the plugs once a year and it went away. It was a conservative tune and thats the key. And not to run it like its a poker run beat the shit out of motor. You need to make sure that you have all of the gauges to monitor the motor at all times. I liked having boost, oil temp, fuel pressure, and I also added a a/f guage. With these extra guages you can have alot of fun a still keep an eye on the motor at all times. I had a tooooooooon of fun with mine and never had one hicup. But you also cant be too pissed if you blow it up. Just know all of the risks you are taking and go for it. It really will wake up the motor and the boat. As far as the drive no problem. Just treat it right. No hammer it out of the hole and easy on the sticks, dont fly the boat. And I allways change the oil in the motor and drive every 10 to 15 hrs. Oil is, cheap and motors and drives are not.

Good stuff! It's amazing what happens when you do pistons, Raylar heads, our cam. 800+HP in that little package. Wish they still made those! They are a king size LS MOTOR structure. Enjoy😉

Thats blasphemous! Maybe the 4.8. Maybe!

Where is the shallow angle valve heads, the alum block with open deck architecture and 6 bolt forged main caps? Forged crank, and OEM FACTORY heads that actually flow.

The LS is a alive and thriving with massive aftermarket support. The 8.1 was dead on arrival and justly so. Sorry Alexi, just an open eyed observation!

Not exactly, they are vastly used in motorhomes and boats for continuous duty low rpm applications. I agree that as they come that their are issues for performance, however when you follow the recipe I mentioned above, they work well.
No one said they were the best engine made, just decent.

    * If I had it my way I would be dropping the boat off at your shop and dropping one of your EFI Blower Motors into it with an IMCO Drive. But that isn't gonna happen anytime soon sadly. That is why I am leaning towards the Wipple until I am ready for the motor/drive swap. I think I will set it up fairly conservatively and well, if it blows up then I will be buying a new motor sooner then I want. But I think I'll be able to keep it together for a while. After my 22' I am not looking to Jonny Rocket all over the Lake anymore.
