When they cross the line of the bad taste rule (explicitly sexual, etc) they're done. This forum is not going to turn into the toilet that HB had become. If people cannot police themselves then it leaves one option.

There's plenty of non industry sites people can post pretty much whatever they want.

    Hello Rexone:

I understand you are the voice of reason and restraint so as not to chill the freedom of expression in this forum.

However, if you are going to start moderating agressively. I would point out it would be prudent to do so early on in a thread. In the Ultra thread you waited until 350+ posts were made before any warning or appropriate comment was made to the offending parties [plural].

In my opinion a moderator should have stepped in at about post #57 when someone threatened bodily harm and injury to another member. In addition, to your quoted comments above which I agree with and encourage you to enforce. I would also including any joking about hurting someone physically or with the use of a weapon, gun etc... will not be tolerated. Furthermore, joking about it in writing is not excusable either and no room for that exists in the public domain.

I would rather have aggressive enforcement---wherein the positive boaters remain---- versus allowing this forum to become a cess-pool of useless information. The choice rests with the founders of this site of what they envision as a positive environment for boaters ie... to help each other with questions and answers in a social setting about our passion--- boating.

On a positive note, I believe the "Gray Water" area is a great idea a place where people can go and argue with each other and bash to their hearts content. [Note: within the bounds described above]

    Respectfully,

    KAP

    Mike,

So far you and the admin seem to have your hands full with the same 2 or 3 a**holes turning good threads to sh*t.

Seems this level of bashing is uncalled for and out of line, no matter what forum it is contained in.

IMO, if PB allows this BS bashing attack crap to continue, it's going to negatively affect what PB is trying to put together.

We all know that UltraJohn and Grads have an issue with John West and Ultra, We all know that Ultra John filed a law suit against John West and Ultra. But damn, is PB going to allow the personal BS from these few to dominate the spirit of these forums and continue to destroy and/or close quality threads. I for one hope this will not be the case.

We all enjoyed much of the light hearted jousting that went on the old site as long as it was done in the spirit of fun. Much of what caused many threads to be moved to GW and be locked has been very mean spirited.

I would hope that the folks at PB are not going to allow its website to contunue to be used as a venue to carry out personal attacks on anyone or any company. IMO, it's wrong and not the place.

    Thanks

    John M

But that's why everyone went there.

Unfortunetly, it's part of the inherent dark side of the internet.
You can't really get away from it except to do what's being done.
It's too bad some people can't restrain themselves that they have to be restrained.

Sorry I had not had time to respond in more detail to this until now.

Thanks for the input people. We do read it and certainly try to absorb everyones views into what ultimately will become a nice forum that is fun to visit and at the same time not containing some of the more offensive content that was contained on HB. Some didn't mind that stuff but many did.

While we'd like to be right on top of every thread it's simply not possible. I personally wasn't alerted to the video thread until it already had a couple days going. So it's helpful if you see a problem or what you think is even heading in a downward direction just alert a moderator or admin to keep an eye on it. That doesn't mean anyone's gonna drop the hammer on someone, only that it will be watched more closely. With hundreds of threads going in dozens of forums we're not going to see them all.

As far as locking, yes some will get locked. Because of time constraints many times when there is a problem (speaking for me here) I will lock something to stop the downward progress temporarily until we have time to review with admin if necessary or simply have time to come back and edit slightly and reopen later. This was the case with a couple today. Didn't have time yesterday to fix properly, so they got moved to GW locked, then fixed today and reopened, warnings sent where necessary and so on.

It is not the mods or admins goal to ban anyone or be oppressive in locking or deleting thread content. We'd like people to use self restraint and comply with the spirit that the forums were created for (my first paragraph). Most have no problem with it. Those that do, get warned and ultimately will get banned if they continue to stir the pot beyond what admin and ownership want for forum content. It's really pretty tough to get banned here. You either have to blatantly break a hard rule (like porn, threats, alias with intent to damage) or continually and habitually post things that are in bad taste or keep doing things mods or admin have asked to not occur. Ignoring moderators warnings is a pretty certain way to get you on the shit list. An example would be personal attacks regardless if they are veiled behind creative writing or not. Admin is trying to be patient and allow everyone ample opportunity to see the light. I'm sure at some point this patience will expire.

    Dear Mike:

Thank you for the detailed response. I understand you have a difficult job of keeping track of every thread and reading numerous posts.

I would assume you have far more experience than I in forums. Yet I can offer this observation---I can distinguish rather easily those threads that are out of control. The red flag/indicator would be the post/view counts as trouble has a way of replicating itself or spiraling out of control.

One idea I had is not to outright ban someone but suspend their privileges for a short period of time ie...30 days---this would have a cool down effect and send a blunt message rather quickly. In the alternative, place them on probation for a period of time---if improper activity occurs during that period then ban them permanently.

I do not think this is onerous as only a few people would be affected and it would be easy to keep track of over time.

Once again thank you for all your efforts and hard work.

    Very truly yours,

    KAP

    Red face

Yeah for limits on what will (and will NOT) be allowed in the forums here!!!! All I can say is "Thanks"!

Too many sites that I visit get "hi-jacked" by what I have concluded are juveniles (or possibly adults who behave like juveniles) and have nothing better to do than ruin what might have been a fun conversation.

Sorta like a screamin' two year old in ......
    a. a nice restaurant
    b. a quiet theater
    c. a noisy concert
    d. any place a two year old wouldn't want to be anyway
